Like many others on this list of reviewers, I bought the SP-303 as a replacement for my Korg ES-1 which was heavily damaged at a gig. As much as I loved the ES-1's sequencer and features, I think the Boss SP-303 is better suited for the kind of sampling I'm into. I really enjoy being able to loop the samples, I love the effects, which remind me of some of the ones from the Boss VF-1 Multiple Effects Processor, and I think the sound quality of both the samples and effects are superior to the ES-1. But, if I were to have to recommend a sampler cum drum machine, I would have to tell you to go with the Korg ES-1, as the SP-303 is best suited as a looper and virtual cart player for those of us who like to drop in more cinematic sound bits. One thing I found a little annoying about the SP-303 is that you cannot load samples longer than 30 seconds when using a smart media card. But this is still a minimal problem, considering the fact that you can plop in a 64MB Smartmedia card, and expand the memory to 33 minutes of sampling (multi-track anyone?), this can be overlooked. Oh and I do not want to end this on too sour a note, but I think Roland should give us back the 1/4 inch ins and outs which used to be on all pro gear, along with the RCA ins and outs found on DJ and consumer gear. Zoom have done it, so can you. Plus, a MIDI thru would also have been nice, as I now have to get yet another Anatek thru box.

I spent months trying to decide which sampler would be best suited to my DJ set up, my first experiance of a sampler was a borrowed SP 808.....what a nightmare..over complicated and too advanced for a DJ set up....almost put me off bothering to get a sampler at all..however I picked up my 303 for �220 in turnkey about a month ago.........and I love it....purchased a 64mb card for it and I now have some classy breakbeat and house drum loops etc to put into the mix and to tweak the f*** out of....so any DJ's who want to get an easy to use sampler...this is the one. One bad note.....beware of pressing the sample pad when the samplers channel is selected on your mixer.......i did this and produced some bad feed back and blew my speakers....I have been waiting 4 weeks to get them back from repair......not good. Any tips from long time users much appreciated. Cheers.

I just got this device and I must say that it is good for loops and individual drum samples. The effects, while not the best, do add to the samples. Resampling is a little of a hassle, however. An external sequencer is recommended.

Hey I made the same mistake. I went out and bought an SP-303 because I broke my KORG ES-1. The ES-1 was great but the only problem was you could only use two recorded samples at a time. I broke the motherboard on mine and to get it fixed it was going to be 400$. I thought to myself maybe I should get a BOSS SP-303 for laying down beats and remixing. It is so primitive. To edit the start and stop points takes forever and it isn't accurate.
