I love this lil unit, if only for the fact that I can keep in om my lap while making beats. The sequencer takes a little to get used to, but works fine for the style I make (hip-hop, breaks, drum 'n bass). I would have loved a more direct interface with my PC, but using a SmartMedia reader works fine. The sound has a mildy dirty character to it when cranked up high and I really like that (if you don't, keep the volume down and it will sound clean). I would have loved seperate outputs though.
I got me this unit when it was still pretty new on the market, but nowadays you can get one comparatively cheap. This little box got quite some use in my studio and on stage. Despite the fact that I got me a lot of other gear in the meantime, I keep on using it... and I find that its quirks add to its charm.

I just bought a Korg ES1 and im kicking myself for it... what a bag of junk...all that thing is good for is 16th note drum patterns and getting that 32khz grime sound. We just got a 505 in at my job, so I brought in some vinyl and tried it out.. this thing is great ! its like a baby MPC... sounds almost as hard also. Only gripes I got against it are the plastic case and 8 note polyphony so its not great for producing instrumental only tracks. But for the price this baby gets the job done wayyyyyyyyy better that the electribe ES1. If you are looking for a good all around sampler under $500 this baby is the way to go !

The SP-505 is a hot little unit! Don't have the money for an MPC, COP THIS!!! I purchased it because Madlib endorsed the SP-303, in which he used to build nearly all of his beats. The effects are, well, effective. Using this in conjunction to your favorite midi-compatible soundcard to interface the SP-505 with your favorite production suite (ProTools at best), and you've got a powerhouse. If you're thinking about getting this machine, stop thinking. BUY IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 505 is an ok sampler. its quick and easy to use and if you use it for drum programming you can get some really nice 'human' feeling patterns made as you need to play them in by hand. This is also one of its downfalls depending on how good your timing is.
The main downfalls of the 505 in my opinion are the effects and the overall build. It feels a bit like a toy. The effects are very standard and you can only assign 1 at a time. most of them aren't worth using anyway.
I use mine for triggering samples live rather than sequencing and for this it does the job. the lcd screen is great for editing too.
If you can get one cheap give it a go, if you dont like it im sure you could sell it easy enough.

The 505 is a great little box for getting work done quickly. I got it second hand for �150.
The main problem is the sequencer. nowhere near as easy to tweak your patterns as the electribes are but the speed of the sampling and the file management is a lot easier. Its great for improvised stuff and, although there isn't the normal groovebox style step sequencer, the fact that you need to play your patterns in 'live' gives it a more human feel. Effects are pretty poor though.
I mainly use this live, purely because of the number of samples you can have quick access to at any time. 16 pads per bank, and they load instantly.
A good sampler if you can get one second hand. The graphical display makes life easy once you get your head into how this baby works.
