The boss dr-5 is the first "synth" type device I have owned. Right out of
the box it was very easy to use. With step and real time writing ability
it is very easy to take sheet music and input it directly to the machine.
There are a few drawbacks with this machine. There are only 2 crash cymbals.
I don't get it 40 bass drums, another 40 snares and only 2 crashes 1 splash
and 2 rides? I don't get it. I suppose it is because cymbals take up more
rom than drum sounds. The high hat sounds are very good. The acoustic guitar
is awesome however since this is supposed to be aimed at guitar players for
a rythm section I don't fully understand why it is there. Also it says you
can store 200 patterns. Hah. My music that I am inputting is very full lots
of things happeneing. The unit can only hold 5000 notes in those 200 patterns
so I fill the memory at around 120. And if you want more you have to do a midid
dump to a computer or roland sequencer. The guitar input is very cool. I have
people on the net hacking it before. They either can't read a manual or get
it through their heads that YOU CAN ONLY PLAY ONE NOTE AT A TIME! If your
guitar is in tune and you only play one note at a time this can be an excellent
way to record your bass lines. The automated chord function is awesome. Hit
the note you want to be the root and hit the chord type. DONE. The have 6
programed chord types and three user for each Chord! (YEs even m7flat5) All
in all I am happy with my machine. It is great for 4 tracking. However a
little more memory, crashes, and touch sensitive buttons would have made
this good unit a great one.
