Many people think that the Filter of Casio FZ is digital because casio called it DCF ( digital controlled Filter ). But the Filter is a digital controlled analog Filter. It is an analog IC with analog IN and Out-puts and analog opertations conrolled by the digital Processor. It sounds very organic and fat. I love it!
In my opinion Roland D-50 was the first Synth with full digital Filter in 1987.

Even by modern standards this incredibly inexpensive box (paid $49!) implements features that are hard to come by anywhere else. I'm specifically talking about three main aspects: 8 stage loop envelopes, 8 stage dcf/dca envelopes, and waveform drawing/additive synthesis. The 8 stage loop envelopes are completely unique as far as I'm aware and very capable of creating equally as unique results. The 8 stage amp and filter envelopes are not quite as unheard of but are still a real nice feature for evolving your content(especially with that nasty little filter its got). And the waveform drawing and synthesis abilities are a lot of fun to mess with and effective as well. As mentioned in passing, it also has a really sick filter. Shards of glass at the upper end w/full resonance, no analog cream here! But thats whats so cool about in the first place, a different flavor. Naturally lo-fi, this thing adds crunch to whatever goes through. I could bitch and moan about a few things, or lack there of, but considering the price and age of the instrument I would be nothing but a moaning bitch. What a find.

My favorite sampler. verry good on drumsounds. It compares to my EMU SP-1200 in a crunchy way. for less $. Can make interesting env. loops.

I bought one of these puppies for £35 about 6 months ago. It was (is) my first hardwarer sampler. OK it is not the most modern looking - its very black, it weighs more than my missus and transfering samples can take a while but IT WAS ONLY £35. Bargain. I actually bought 2. My brother has the other. The filters are really cool and can be edited via midi so you can really mess with the sound. Also, it has 8 stage envelopes like my CZ1000 which with some time and the manual (which you can buy online from Casio UK for a fiver) allows some nice bass sounds. I have also got some nice pads from albeit with the help of a midiverb 3 and behringer effects unit.
I am sure there are loads of people out there who would slate little unit. Many people will never have used or heard of it. But as a first stop into hardware sampling to see if its for you or not, at the prices it attracts its a no brainer.
I saw an FZ1 in the local paper for £30 the other week. Hell - if nothing else - if you have a sample that you want to add grit to sample it in this a 9Khz - more grit than you care to imagine.

the worst thing is the disc drive. If it hasn't failed yet - IT WILL - within the next 30 days. It's about the time that all the fz-10's drives are about to expire if they havent already. VERY UNreliable and shitty disc drive. Once it's broken it makes the unit unusable (unless you like smidi transfers)
