I rediscovered this crazy little machine at the bottom of a cupboard about a week ago, and I'm having fun with it again. Dispite being used to far far superior synths now, it still offers some tones you can get anywhere else. Complete with cheezy 'WHAM!' demo and crappy mono speaker, it constitutes about an hours worth of entertainment.

Uh-huh. The SA-1. Are you laughing yet?? If not, you don't have a clue. If so, you probably love this little toy as much as I do mine. A wall-wart for it cost me twice as much!! Got it home, plugged in, and was entranced for 2 hrs. For the uninitiated, the SA-1 is a >>toy<<. 32 keys, 100 voices, and 32 rhythms of varying cheeziness; I bought it from a Salvation Army or such as a cheap metronome. Stepwise volume (up/down keys), which has a great side-effect of varying the overtone series for both the main tones & the drums. It's actually a PCM, so the tones can be surprisingly lush for something 3" x 12" x 1". When I got my new sampler home, first loop I made was of the SA-1 "ROCK 2" at about 85 bpm, overloading the input, then I slowed it down about 20% & OmyGOD... if you heard this through the PA, you'd wet yourself -- I've used that loop for metal, grunge, trance, & Irish tunes since then. It's that rich. (Beside all that, the "tempo" button only has like 13 steps.) THE MORAL: buy cheap, be original, have fun.
