a friend let me borrow this thing to sample the hell out it. i must say that there is something truly great about everything casio put it's hand's on in the 80's. they are the only one's to give such cheap toyish equipment a SOUL. this thing is so much fun, the last instrument that gave me this much inspiration was my cz101.i actually wrote the chorus to song whlie i was driving, don't recommend that to anyone else, but it was so easy to do with that little keyboard now i am on a mission to find my own....

Bought mine in 1989 for 5. Sampled the dinky drum tones, don't know why. Great as a gimmick in the early 80's but lets face it, without any outboard efx it's CRAP! Still their seems to be a resurgence of interest, WHY? I'll sell mine for a squillion quid! Maybe not? Oh god now the LCD doesn't work. tssk...

I have just gotten reacquainted with an old friend of mine, the Casio VL-1, aka VL-Tone. Back in 1983, synths were still very expensive, but a friend of mine was kind enough to sell me his VL-1 and I was able to make good use of its sequencer and ADSR sound generation mode to create crude, but effective tunes, or sketches of tunes which I would later recreate in the studio using serious instruments. During one such studio session, I ran the VL-1 through reverb and was quite impressed by the little ivory beasts unique sound. Years later, around the time everyone was selling their analogue and FM synths to get Korg M1s etc., I sold my VL-1 to a friend who collected vintage computers and other 80s gadgetry. What a mistake Thanks to eBay, I was able to find a decent replacement for my long lost VL-Tone, and Im now using it in new tracks. Sure its a tiny toy, sure it sounds dreadful through its internal speaker, but run it through effects, and youll have something which nothing else can emulate; and thats what really counts in the end, its all about the character of an instrument, a quality that is only now starting to become a key factor with synth designers. The Casio VL 1 Tone is a beast. What more could you ask for? It's got a built in calculator, I mean, come on... If you're going for the pro grooves, or just messing around in your home studio The Casio VL 1 is the most important tool for any electronic musician.
