VL-magic!! I got mine when I was ten, and I loved it. I'm now 34 and I still love it, and play it regularly. So much fun potential, from recreating Trio and Human League hits, to typing telephone numbers into the calculator to see what comes out of the synth! Really just a desk toy, but WHAT a desk toy!!! I believe the world will be just fine, so long as there's a VL-1 playing somewhere.......

You're all correct: this is a superior machine. Those sounds just have a certain magic to them, especially when compared to similar square wave based keyboards of the era. Try comparing some and you'll see why this one has held on to its cult status. All the sounds are so nostalgic, as you can make it sound exactly like a nintendo game, especially the flute. Turn up the March rhythm and pound out any 80's cartoon or video game theme song. It's weary shuffling make heart smile. But on a more practical level, this is a great source for unique, thin, buzzy, analogue wave forms. Start with a preset, or create your own sound with the ADSR function which you can then sample and manipulate, or use straight out of the box with lots of effects. Because of the buzzy nature of the sounds, it responds well to filtering. With an envelope filter or maybe wah pedal, you can make some pretty fat sounds actually. Phasers are nice too. This aproach gives you alot of control over the synthesis, resulting in fresh, unique sounds.
