Used by Steve Poindexter and Prince Paul on classic house and hiphop records respectively, this machine is a vintage beast. Bought my first one 5 years ago (w/MT option) due its cult "poor man's SP-12" status. Just picked another one up today so now I have one at home and one at the studio! Wish it was the elusive RZ-1 Plus!! What more needs to be said? Hi-hats and claps that can cut thru any mix and the venerable sampling option. Threw a few kicks and snares from my ASR-10 and in a few shakes of a rabbit's tail I had some grimey 12 bit drums. The sequencer is a bit quirky but if you mess up, it adds a unique flavor to your pattern that you never would've thought of. You can make some old school Mantronix flavored drums with this thing. I've been using my one at home to process drums and then throw them into my Boss SP-303. You already know what it's hittin' for.

Great machine - very good hi-hatts and claps - individual outputs - got mine "used and circuit-bended" on e-bay for 70 euro - easy to program : start record and there's your pattern - combined with the low-bit sample-sounds it's an inexhaustible source for electronic percussive tracks - beware for the internal battery : had to change mine.

Okay Listen here. I just got the "RZ-1-PLUS" (modified) version! This is not the regular RZ-1.It has 36 ROM sounds and holds 16 samples!!!!Yeah SIXTEEN! BUT, the polyphony is still the same so its like having different kits, you cant use 16 for a pattern, but you can flip the switches and change the samples you know. Ive searched for 7 years to find this "RZ-PLUS" version after having a regular RZ-1 and I can tell you that its *RARE*. Its got 4 toggle switches on the right and says "RZ PLUS DRUMWARE", good luck finding one. The regular RZ-1 is a great beast of a machine but after having the PLUS now the acoustic kit of the regular RZ-1 isnt as exciting. But the RZ's have individual outs though with sliders and thats a big deal!! If you have an RZ-1 and make the mistake of thinking you have outgrown it, youre a sucker because the RZ-1 is a classic thats got lots of character!

The RZ-1...bought mine in a pawn shop in chicago...was rumored to be the same machine that created the song "work that motherfucker" and after talking to Steve Pointdexter found out that it might have been indeed his (he pawned it at the same place:)
Greatest Handclap ever...I still use the Handclap now in tracks...that sound has been used by several producers, Like DBX (Daniel Bell) for it's cutting, snapping character.
The most glaring omission I've noticed in all of the reviews here...You cannot use this thing to play your created patterns with MIDI (the internal time clock will lag like heck and eventually after 28 bars you'll be out of sync), the only way is to use it by itself or sample it.
Great machine for $75-100, would not buy another unless I could circuit bend it...
