Definitely well worth the price. You can create sounds with the NL3's FM and extensive modulation capabilities that other VA synths couldn't possibly do. I had a Nord Modular keyboard for a while which had more options for sound development but I like using the NL3 much better. It's more fun to play, IMO. You'll get some really diverse results a whole lot quicker than you can with the Modular and have a lot more polyphony for layering and splits. The user interface is great! Almost all controls are available directly from the front panel without needing to go through layers of menus and sub-menus. The LED rings around the controls show exactly where the parameter was set and how far you adjusted from the initial setting. Even though the NL3 has no effects section, it can sound very fat and Oberheim-like, especially with the unison mode that allows you to play 5 detuned voices per note and still have 24 note polyphony.

I've had this keyboard for about 2 months now, and I think it is fantastic. I really enjoy the tweakability of the interface, and the sounds that you can create are powerful. Sometimes for heavier dark sounds I'll actually run it through a RAT guitar pedal with the distortion slightly on, and the tones that come out are just plain mean...it's great! And for sound design, the possibilities are endless. Anyway, I do have a comment about the durability of the pitch stick. Actually, that is the reason I am writing this review. My pitch stick just stopped working, and I don't know why. I play this board daily, but somehow I think that this is not a result of normal wear and tear. I have heard people say that the Nords are built like a tank, which is why I am concerned about this pitch bend problem.

The new OS is a must, so if you are still working with the old one, upgrade now. It really improves the response time of the morph function when you assign a lot of parameters to the wheel. Also, the mute functions with the new OS are really useful.

If anybody else has had problems with their pitch stick, please feel free to email me and let me know how you solved the problem. I just contacted Clavia to ask their advice. I am sure that they will reply quickly and politely just like they did with my last email to them. The Clavia staff has been very courteous with me.

If you are considering buying this keyboard, do it. It is very versatile and creates quality sounds.

If anyone has questions about the pitch stick, email me in a week, and I will be happy to let you know how things turned out.

4 out of 5 because I don't think the pitch stick should stop working after 2 months of normal use, but everything else I love. This is my first Clavia product, but I do not think that it will be my last.

The best VA out there. The only drawback is the lack of onboard effects. I use mine with a fireworx and the results are outstanding! I give it a 4for the lack of effects.

Incredible! Truly inspiring. It's what my studio was looking for to complete the sonic pallette. Like an artist having some really amazing colors/tools to paint with.
