If you descide to dislike a synth by listen to the factorypresets you dont know a shit about synthesis! . After hours tweaking with NORDLEAD 3 i discoverd that this is a freakout blast synth!!. I listened to the fact presets and they dont show a third of what this thing can do. You can tweak the sound to your own taste = hard icecold to warm organic sounds. So do not judge the Nordlead 3 before you have had a couple of hours whith it,THE POTS ARE A BLESSING FOR PERFORMANCE. THE NORDLEAD 3 ARE NOT THE BROTHER OF NORD 1 AND 2 IT`S THE GOD FATHER

Does the Nord sound like an analog? no Does it have a unique rich tone? yes Frankly, I dont care if it sounds like my Moog Sound is sound. Period. Its a breeze to program- especialy with the "one touch" assignement of various controllers and the Euhponix type of leds make it a joy to program. If you want an analog go buy an analog and shut up!

Compare this FAT synth with Roland,Yamaha and especial Novation without the FX and you can hear the difference. Nordlead 3 is more organic and fatter than most of the rest only the Access Virus comes close. If you make your own sounds the Nordlead 3 ivites you to tweak the rotarys and in no time you have wonderful sounds to play with.

I've had my NL3 for five days now. The overall quality of construction and attention to detail is what I've come to expect from Clavia; it is first class! You could use it as a hammer and not hurt it, I think. The stand-out feature, as far as I'm concerned, is the circular LED graph knob. One shortfall of all other such synths, is the fact that you when you first select a patch, the knobs don't align or represent the actual parameter setting. You get a sudden jump, or if the unit provides a pass-through function, you have to twist the knob until the actual setting is found. Neither method is satisfactory. The NL3's knobs eliminate that shortfall. It's so great to see from the get-go exactly where each parameter is set. beyond that, any movement of a knob not only adjusts the parameter from it's actual setting, it shows the setting in the display in real values, Hz, secs, etc. It is definitely a programmers machine. I've never had such fun programming a synth. (Well maybe with the exception of the Andromeda) The presets, with a few exceptions, aren't all that impressive. They are mostly designed to show off the FM functions of the machine. The FM functions add another dimension to the synth that some might appreciate more than others. Personally, I'm after more traditional analog sounds, and the NL3 is in deed capable of creating just that. In my opinion, it is nothing like it's predecessors. I think it is more closely related to the Nord Modular; in fact, there are a couple of presets that are named for NM presets that nail the Modular's sound exactly. One area where the NL3 shines is in the creation of pads. While it doesn't sound all that analog to me, (But then, I've been playing my Andromeda for the past two months) it does analog type pads that evolve and change in ways, due largely to it's FM capabilities, that its predecessors couldn't start to do. There are so many improvements and additions that I can't possibly cover them all. Other stand-outs are the LEDs that flash to the LFO rates, and the second filter; while there are limitations to how the second filter is configured, it definitely adds to the timbral variations that are possible. Is it better than its predecessors? In some ways, clearly it is. In other respects, if I didn't have the Nord Modular, I would regret selling my original NL. There are some sounds from the NL and NL2 that the 3 just can't duplicate. All in all, I like the NL3 a lot. The unit shipped with OS v0.98. I'm looking forward to future updates to the OS, which by the way, is flashable rather than on a chip. If its current state, as awesome as it is, is incomplete, the future of this synth is very bright in deed.
