cz-101 is the heart of the TRIO TETRIS band...I love it...

in 88,i paid for just $55 for it.-it's a funny response(the model numbers) to roland sh101 of 83,i think, and cz101 is from 85/86.it has 4-part multi and can use battery and got a tiny lcd.u can play it on gig and jumping/dancing while ur palying solos if u really like to do so.digital, but quite analog sound on some aspects, synbass,i mean, digital effects are good too.besides these, again, return to the portability issue.(ok,i think it's better than the latter but more expensive vz-series)

i rescued my cz101 from a pwan shop about 5 years ago for $40, it was my first synth and what a weird little guy it is. after programming one of these everything else seems like a sleepwalk IMHO. it has a tiny LCD screen and a two button data entry system. it features ring modulation, noise, vibrato, portamento, and the tone mix function to add extra timbres. the meat of the engine is in the 8 stage envelope generators. once you become familiar with the architecture of this little synth it can really make some weird noises, the output is a little weak compared to "professional" gear, but run through an fx box or a good preamp mixer you can get good levels for sampling. i would never gig with mine because the power supply likes to come out and patches don't stay stored in memory for too long (battery problem?), but it's probably just a problem with my particular unit, which appears to have been severely abused by its previous owners. overall for the price this little board rocks and is great sample fodder. with all of these synth companies releasing "modern" interpretations of their classics, i'd love to see a new CZ model released with dedicated knobs for each envelope stage and more waveforms, call it the CZX9000 or something, i'd buy one. . .

It's a joy to use. I think of new stuff when ever I play on it. Programming new sounds is dead easy - much better than the Yamaha I used to have, and cheaper too.

A very cheap synthesizer with power to burn. Although editing it a pain, you can get some pretty neat stuff (Including very, very, very cheap TB-303 sounds). To most people it will look as if it has little power... This is what I thought until I started to mess around with it. Once you dig deeper, it gets very nice. I'm not sure how to explain the bottom end of the sounds... they are big, but not. Most sounds will give you weird phased flickering noises at the bottom registers that are large sounding, but turn of and on. This makes it so that the bottom isnt nearly as large as it could be. It seems to fake at being large sounding - I get a fat sound out of my speakers, but very little out of the sub-woofer. I'm not saying that the bass isnt large... it is, only it doesnt come out the sub, which is odd. This thing is best used when run through effects proccessors (I find a mix of chorus, pole, delay, and overdrive/disortion works the best with it). Bottom line: Can make nice sounds and has a pseudo low end which makes it so that small speakers can sound big. Hey at this cost... what can you lose (Well $100, but that is beside the point)?
Oh... the wistle sounds DO make the sub work.
I like it.
