it says hobby-ist but if i had my druthers.... the sidstation is really quite lovely. personality, distinct texture, 8-bit + analog filter = some cray-zee stuff. wherefore the other hybrids of today? i hear the waldorf Q+ will have analog filters. i've had my sidstation for 1 3/4 years now and it still surprises me. hold three different notes forever while tweaking/editing a 16-step wavetable and make some serious noise-beats. play notes way up high and make the filter flip out. alas, i do not have the funds for the machinedrum! it is understandable for those who do not like noise to dislike the sid, but some of us cherish it! on an especially complex patch, the noise itself evolves and mutates. incredible stuff. find folks who have one and be nice to them to let you play one.

Little box that sounds like a monster. Too bad there is a little bit delay when triggering from a keyb.

I bought mine from ebay, got it with a noise gate also for 500 bux. The sidstation is a WONDERFUL box, full of surprises, and is EXTREMELY easy to use. After only 2 days, I have made some eargasmic original sounds that you will not ever hear unless the track is produced by me! It's such a relief to be able to make something completely original. I have a proteus 2000, and when I listen to the radio or TV, I always hear the same exact sounds that are taken from that module, and lets not talk about the Triton, cus everybody and their mommas has one of them. The Sidstation is a marvel. Realtime knobs make it a huge plus. Just trigger the sound, hold the button, twist knobs, and scroll through menu's untill you get the desired sound. Perfect for those uncreative days when you can't make tracks.. you can always create new sounds/patches. The bad thing about this is the noise, and yes, I'm complaining about it. I don't care if it's the chip itself, it's LOUD. Just turn the machine one, and the noise is there. There are filters built in, but I'm just warning you.. don't expect kursweil clarity. I use this with my MPC, so I just sample the sounds, chop em up, add effects, and when send it to the mixer, I put it though a gate. End result is that when the music is playing, you hear not a drip of noise. This isn't a machine your going to see at your local guitar center, and it's no surprise that there isn't a s#itload of commadore-64 sid chips in the world, so if you can get your hands on one, do it. Skip the sample cd's, there is no way this machine can be emulated by a few samples (not like other high priced sound modules). Especially in the hip-hop scene where beats sound alike, and samples are used over and over again, the sid-station is a great addition to a studio. I'm sure this will be a highly sought after, collectable item in a few years.

I bought the little beast couple of weeks ago. I use to play analog modular synths since I am an audio engineer and sound designer (with a deep knowledge of various synthesis techniques). I found that this machine is a real tool, always unpredictable and fun. The new OS 1.1 is well done, easy and powerful. The noise is absolutely not a problem, since a gate will do the job easyly, or you can always use it as a particular sound surce for drones and experimental jobs. This time we finally see a real digital machine, no samples thanks God!!!! It has a strong character, and it is alive!!!!!!!!!
