Just a word as to noise and the Sidstation. Yes, it is a noisy unit, but this is not the fault of the Elektron designers, but rather a basic flaw in the SID chip, AFAIK. The chip itself is noisy. Elektron have done their best to reduce the noise level, but there is only so much which could be done (besides having a built-in noise-gate). Unless future Elektron products are based around the SID, noise should not be an issue with them. The Sidstation website has a lot of information about what noise-gates work with the Sid and such, and the Sidstation's and SID chip's general noise level is well documented and easy to find.

As for the unit, I have not tried it, and so cannot review it. I just wanted to correct the implication that the Elektron designers are at fault for the noise level of this unit--it is a basic flaw which must be paid for the benefits which the SID chip gives.

Just my opinion a hobbyist user from usa writes:
This unit is for people who want to be original,(How can you be in this time of age)And for Elektron to get off the ground. But anyway The sidstation sells only due to the fact its different and yes the sounds are cool REAL cool!!!,But That Freaking Background noise ruins this box ITS REAL LOUD!!Sorry to break the news that alot of peeps are not explaining.I guess the sounds in which I said are real cool makes peeps deny the fact of that goddamn background noise.SO if your thinking of buying a Sid just remember pay for the sid and have extra Cash for a noise reducer or something.About that new drum machine I hope Elektron paid off there bills and are seeing higher ground with the cash that the sid brang in,and started to feel more at ease with more cash to invest in a probly better unit. MYOpinion

Nick Hladek a hobbyist user from New Jersey, USA writes:
This is really a most unique piece of equipment. I really can't compare it to anything else, and that's why this synth will set a new standard for sound production for the next generation of electronic music.

The oscillators really fill out the sound. They're really thick ... stack all three of the oscillators for some really present, evil leads. They're so reminiscent of our video game past, yet they're calling, seeking, yearning for something new ... the oscillators say "future" while not forgetting their past. The table feature is really one of the best parts as well ... I still need to do a lot more experimentation.

The filter is one of a kind ... not lush, not smooth, but unique in all the good analog/digital hybrid sorts of ways ... therefore it's deep, it's dirty, it's loud, it's cacaphonous, it's messy, it's grungy. I haven't even tried running a signal through this thing, too, so there's still so much more to discover.

This thing has 4 LFOs which can be independently assigned to the pitch, vibrato, the filter, PWM ... am I forgetting something? The possibilities are beyond my full comprehension, but I'm sure I'll pull something out that's just mind-blowing ... imagine 4 LFOs changing all these things at the same time ... talk about dynamic sounds!

Yes, it's very noisy, but that adds character, in my opinion.

In short, the SidStation is far from a category killer, and it's far from traditional, but if there is one thing about this synth, it's definitely a keeper.

Buy it. You'll like it.
