great... if you can get one... buy it. don't expect to have clean synth sounds ... this is more an electricity killer machine :) great for lead synth, distorted basses or back noises... or if you want it... almost everything. I buy it because i was using an old c64 with a music program cartridge... but this is far away better. this was the synth i was looking for a long time. it's not a perfect machine... but it's unique.

I just picked up a used Sidstation Ninja from Germany. Great machine with a lot of character. It really sticks out in the studio and adds something different to the mix. I have yet to have any problems with system crashes. The OS is IMHO very simple and well laid out. If you like the lofi video game sound I would recommend this or Nanoloop for gameboy. Also I find it hard to complain about the noise level when A.) It can be taken care of with a noise gate. B.) That's half of the Commodore sound.

I love this synth to bits, but it's given me quite a bit of troubble. First, the power flicked off and all the presets went, then there was no sound at all, then the sound came back but it was at the same level as the background noise, so I have to turn up the gain on my amp full or I cant hear a thing and even then i still get all the background noise. eeeeaaahhhggggghhh.... what a head ach, I've not had much luck with elektron helping either, no disrespect to them as a company, but a trouble shooting/faq section on their otherwise wonderful website would be a good idea. They sent me a new copy of the opperating system to try and that did nothing, so they want me to send it to them, but they charge 50euros and hour plus postage and I'd rather try and figure it out my self fot that... I think I might have got a bad one! If anyone has any helpful suggestions, please feel free to contact me..

apart form my rather annoying experience with a few tech problems, this is a superb synth!, it has a fantasticly easy to use interface, and sounds like no other... 8bit kitch style.

the sound.... like that fuzzy itchy energy you get in the back of your eyes sometimes... like when a record you love sounds better on your friend's rubbish old hifi, all tinny and crackly... like after a storm when the air still feels wet and cold, but it has a kind of stillness that holds close to your skin and makes you feel like still you're inside...

enough of that though. It's good, but it can be troubble. but it's worth it. oh, and it looks good too, and we should love it for that if nothing else. and it's really light. really really light, like there's nothing in it. like malteasers.

5 for the sound, 5 for the style, 5 for the fuzzy eye thing, but only 2 for the reliability.

the first one i bought was mashed. first time turning it on lost all the presets, wouldn't make a sound when i started programming my own and the screen went blank. was not chuffed as my machinedrum was screaming out of the box. so i sent it back and got another one which like my MD was screaming straight out of the box. i don't use it everyday and on everything but when i do use it i have a big grin on my face and i bounce around like a monkey. The interface is easy, more than 4 pots would be nice but then you would rush and why do that when it's so much more fun being a tech geek. 5 for that wacky sound

i just got my sidstation today. mine is final 100 edition #54. i knew this thing sounded phatt from hearing a bunch of audio demos of it, but when i turned it on and started flippin thru the presets i was blown away. this this is amazing! its dead easy to use, i was editing parameters and saving sounds in a matter of minutes! im VERY impressed with its highly original sound.. as other peopel have stated it does have a high background noise level, but the kinds of background noises vary depending on the patch in use. some patches are very simple hence very low noise lever, and some are complex causing a higher noise level, its because the oscillators & etc do not fully close this is a bug with the sid chip itself. but i like it, it adds to the originality of the unit. this is a love hate kinda synth, ur eitehr gonna LOVE it like myself, or hate it... this is not a very good comparison due to the fact that the synth engines are very different, but id have to say its only real competition is Dave Smith's Evolver, they are both very unique sounding table top synths..
