The MD never claims to be an 'emulator' for any drum box, especially not the x0x or SP-12/00. People who buy it thinking that are sorely missing the point. Yeah the 'TR" machine is 'inspired' by the TR-boxes, and the 'E12' machine is 'carries the tradition of...' the SP- and Simmons sample-based boxes, but Elektron isn't trying to fool anyone here - and the MD can go above and beyond what those old-school boxes can do (don't get me wrong, I love my SP-12 and TR-606, too). There simply has never been any other hardware drum synth in history with all these features. Period.
The sound is great. Anyone who has spent more than 3 weeks with this thing will know that. Like any good piece of kit, the more you dig in and program it, the better it sounds. It's not 'cold' unless you program it that way. You can get some very warm, snappy analog-ish sounds from this easily, but if you want analog drums, buy an analog drum machine. I've also got a Jomox AirBase and a Vermona DRM-1, but use this more. I've had it for over year, and I use it in one way or another on every track.
The price too high...? Come ON people. Short of buying a computer, what other box gives you this range of sounds + editability, full MIDI implementation, a great hardware sequencer, dynamics processors, assignable outs and ins, and regular OS updates...?
