If you have to have an EMAX make sure it`s one of these the "II", as the original EMAX and EMAX-SE were clumsy, limited, had bugger all RAM and sounded flat, to upgrade to hard disk was a nightmare and the RAM on the original couldn`t be expanded, better than a Mirage or S10 but only just..I Had one a week and sold it. The Mk2 is a better bet, but still too big. Get an ESI32 if you want the EMU sound on a budget. Marks are for the Mk2, the Mk1 isn`t worth studio space

I'v got one of the last ones, 8 meg, internal harddrive, never had a problem. Wish it had more memory. Sequencer is very plain, just a 16track recorder but it does enter its data into sample memory instead of some little chunk of static ram... Digital filters arn't bad, but just a ghost compared to a decent analog machine... Works well with Zip drives... using this with an external sequencer is way more complicated than it needs to be... easy to program, not fun to set a good loop point though. Wish I had a Mac with Alchemy for this doggy... not so sure I'd trade for ESI32... ESI sounds more brittle.... guess I'd be happy with either... E4K is where they are almost getting it right, maybe ESI4000...

NIK GERBOTH a part time user from UNITED STATES writes:
THE EMAX II HAS BEEN A GREAT TOOL IN MY SOUND CREATION LAB. I HAD IT MAXED OUT AT 8 MEGS AND USE IT ON A DAILY BASIS.

I FIND IT'S EDITING CAPABILITYS TO BE USEFUL IN CONSTRUCTING

LOOPS FOR SONGS THE SUPERMODE IT GREAT. THE ONLY THING I CAN SAY BAD ABOUT THE THING IS THE INABILITY TO GO PAST 8 MEGS OF RAM LIMITING IT'S ABILITY TO HAVE SEVERAL LONG INTRICATE LOOPS GOING AT ONCE. AFTER ALL A GOOD GRAND PIANO SAMPLE PROGRAM CAN EAT EIGHT MEGS UP RIGHT THERE. I ALSO AM HAVING DIFFICULTY IN LOADING SOUNDS FROM THE NET AND TRYING TO LOAD THEM FROM MY COMPUTER TO THE EMAX ITSELF THE PROGRAMS PROVIDED BY THE NET DON'T SEEM TO WORK WITH MY MACHINE, I ALWAYS GET A DISK ERROR WHEN EVER I TRY TO TRANSFER DATA USING FLOPPY DISCS.

Jeremiah M. Stanfill a professional user from USA writes:
"Keep in mind that the EMAX II was designed eleven years ago."

I have known in some of the earlier models of frequent problems with

its internal hardrive crashing; I do not have any knowledge if the

design of the instrument is improved. The sequencer has sixteen tracks;

seemingly useless -- very little editing. the modulator (LFO) has only

one waveshape -- a triangular waveform.

If you have the patience, work with the interpolation (additive) synthesis

engine. it is not quite the one for resynthesis but it does make very evocative

textures -- it was meant to be used to spice up your samples.
