CORRECTION to my earlier review of the Proteus 1: change "page 63" to "page 64."

John Miller a hobbyist user from United States writes:
I just took my Emu Proteus 1 out of the closet for the first time in many years, and I'm going to use it for a gig (because my main keyboard is not available and I'm scrambling to put together a keyboard setup with my second-string stuff. )

I'm reading the manual trying to set up some presets and I just found the nastiest omission on page 60 in the Save Preset section. It says, "To save a preset, move the cursor ot the bottom line and select the location for the new preset with the data entry control." What it forgot to tell you was, before that, you have to move the Edit menu to the "Save Preset" screen which is the last screen in the Edit menu. (It does tell you about going to the "Save Preset" screen on page 63, but unfortunately the index for "Save Preset" only refers to page 60 which, as I wrote above, leaves this step out.)

I hope this helps some other Proteus 1, Proteus 2, Proteus 3, or Proteus 1 Plus 2 users in the future.

For Internet search purposes, I guess I've written the name "Proteus" and the phrase "Save Preset" enough times above that this review will be findable via search engine. If this helps anyone, feel free to drop me a line at beachboys@mac.com ( or beachboys <at> mac dot com if they're censoring e-mail addresses in these reviews.) I'm giving a review rating of 1 for this product for no other reason than because the hassle this caused me.

What can I say what a brilliant piece of kit... Amazing sounds a real inspiration.. What more can i say !!!! er I am lying !!!!! Its shite with a capital s !!!! Complete waste of time its got one sound I like and apart from that its so boring I can see how phil collins liked it. Basically if you are into phil buy it and re live those genocide moments.. Personally I would rather slide down a banister made out of razor blades....

I cant believe this module get so slated here, sure, its not awe inspiring but pretty solid. 6 seperate outs all configurable is damn usefull. The drum sets I think are great with a good collection of different percussion. It does actually have on board effects (if you can be bothered and dont have out board ones)Piano sounds are good as are some pads. Only real hassles are battery and loosing presets. As ppl have said, solid meat and veg :)

Rick a part-time user from USA writes:
Fantastic set of bread and butter sounds!! This is a must for my kitchen! I got the Proteus 1 with the Protologic Chip in it so its got like an extra 120 or so sounds. Even Better!! Altogether a lot of possibilities and tweakable parameters & starting out with about 320 sounds gets you going in the right direction. These units can be had fairly cheap cuz people think they are outdated (heheheh) and I guess they are, but what a nice cornacopia of sounds to work with. Get one if you need some essentials to build on.
