Fantastic set of bread and butter sounds!! This is a must for my kitchen! I got the Proteus 1 with the Protologic Chip in it so its got like an extra 120 or so sounds. Even Better!! Altogether a lot of possibilities and tweakable parameters & starting out with about 320 sounds gets you going in the right direction. These units can be had fairly cheap cuz people think they are outdated (heheheh) and I guess they are, but what a nice cornacopia of sounds to work with. Get one if you need some essentials to build on.

I have to agree with Thomas Kolb on this one. Every sound on this machine sounds like it's off of a Janet Jackson CD. That's good and that's bad. I'm from the school where originality is key, so from that perspective, I'd like a little more variety in a synth, so I guess a Proteus isn't for me. However... I'm also from the school that says you should always have some good generic sounds on standby because you never know when you'll need them, and why make your main axe do them if something else that you can buy so cheap is willing to do it for you? From this perspective, the Proteus shines. If you're playing in a wedding band, it's a must-have. If you're recording karaoke-style music, it'll prove invaluable. If you're a member of Yes, you'll laugh at it... The best use I have for my Proteus is that it sits in its little rackmoujnt with all its brothers and sisters, and when I just can't seem to find the right sound I'm looking for on the 9 or 10 other synths and samplers I own, I can pretty much count on it being on the Proteus. It definately has a place in my studio...

It has not many categories of sounds...but the few it has are brilliant! Very good Piano-Synth Layers,GREAT Strings!!!!,And as a user said above....layer a choir with the strings and you�ll have nothing more to say, Can be bought very cheap...if you are looking for an easy to use and very flexible module...check it out!!!

Great in its day, maybe, but less so now. Very uneven selection of samples. Generally sort of thin and brittle-sounding. Good high end, bad low end.No on-board effects processor.
Drums: Awful, useless. Piano: I like it but it's small -- sounds like an upright. Bass: slap bass good, nothing else memorable. Strings: Clear and usable but not thick or warm. Horns: Very usable trumpet & bari. Some notes in alto sax seem to be out of tune--a drag. guitar: good acoustic guitar, & one good electric with effects. Keys: A good B3, but only one.
Some presets work as-is for tinkly sounds and emulations, but I never found programming this box very fun or productive. Apparently it does have a lot of controller routings if you're into that.

it is shit! and the drums are wack! I can be fair and say there are a few sounds you can use but other then that i regreted buying this junk. Dam ugly to if i may say so. Dont waste money on this crap.
