I bought this s/h about 2 years ago for about £200GBP. I have added the XLead and both Orch ROMs. I've used the straight patches for various projects, including theatre work, and it's been a great workhorse, though if I had my time again I'd probably get a JV for this sort of work. It does take a bit of an effort to get the bread and butter stuff to sit well together.
But I think the real strength of this instrument is in its incredible programming potential. The manual is a helpful introduction, but to get the most out of it you have to set quite a bit of time aside to experiment. Believe me, it pays off. This is a truly awesome machine - a really sophisticated synth with endless possibilites, from the sublime to the ridiculous. To make things easier there is a third party desktop editor available for free download called Proteum - try googling emigr8.

Cheers, great site. Bought my Proteus 2000 rack of ebay roughly 6 months ago, this unit has the 2.26 OP and came with the 'Composer' and 'Techno' rom's installed. Ive also added the 'XL-1' rom since then. Paid 450.00 Canadian for it with the two roms. Right then the Proteus 2000 is a well laid out, easy to use, dam powerfull ROM player. The many filter's sound increadable and with the 4 layer's you can get real deep. Most the effect's are rubbish though the Proteus was obviously also made for externall effect proccessing with having the Sub 1 and Sub 2 jacks as effect sends and returns and other option's. I also find the manual helped me allot, this rack was a great investment and has done allot for my production's. Fully recomend the Proteus 2000 to anyone startin out that are lookin for something different than just another software rom player, cheers.

But when edited it can sound very good. Some unique sounds.Very Special.

Junk when edited it may sound good but it is to much work.Many sounds keep on sustaining when you change patch,ok you can edit but some analog sound you want them to sustain.Even when you use the linkprogram no sound or to muddy or it takes 2-3 seconds to sound.Maybe it is underpowered.To many samples and they are to sterile and digital.Velocity are difficult to adjust.

I bought my first Proteus 2000 used in a music store for $400 Canadian. Then I ordered the B3, Orchestral Card and Perfect Piano(ZR) cards. I enjoyed the new cards so much, I bought a new Proteus 2000 at the same store for $400 Canadian (their policy ensures you pay the same price for a second item). I filled that one with another B3 card, the Vintage Sounds (the "fat brass" is to die for), and XL (electronica)card, and am having a ball auditioning favourites and saving them in the RAM banks. Coincidentally, just after the first P2000, I was asked to try out for a classic rock band, and the guys just loved the B3 sounds, the clav, electric piano sounds, and the composite horn section sound (linking 3 patches with 4 layers each). I haven't bothered with any re-programming of sounds or effects routings, but the link function is great! I built a grand piano sound by linking the same patch but one octave lower, and lowered the volume, and that sound cuts through 3 guitar players in the band over 5 octaves! Yes, there are a lot of similar sounding patches, and I wish they would have only used 10-20% of the sounds but with more RAM for even more bang, but linking makes up for that! Also, I can instantly compare link changes on one Proteus to the other original sound. I even linked and adjusted a distorted B3 sound with a cleaner B3 to simulate a "Santana" sound that is both full and cuts like a tonewheel. Using a volume/expression pedal with my DX7 (Grey Matter) on the organ sounds, means I can switch the leslie speed effect from slow to fast to slow, or keep it just in between without moving the left hand to move the mod wheel!! I also encountered one reviewer's issue about the link function changing one of the patches, but I simply made the linked patch the primary patch and linked the original and another one. By adjusting the relative volumes, I can customize patches to stand out in the band. Basically, I love the Proteus 2000, but especially with the extra sound cards!
