I have had the Proteus/1 with PL Rom since 1991, and it has certainly slipped in the ratings from what I can see. For being almost 15 years old, I think it stacks up well, though newer units have better specs. The P/1 always had great, real sounding samples, but no effects. I run mine through two fx boxes by GSP & SGX next to a Kork X5DR, and though the latter gets higher ratings here, the P/1 is clearly better sounding with fx than the Korg, which is more electronic in sounds by comparison.
The unit does pop on startup (needs sequencial power up or an amp that pauses...most do). Parameters are highly editable and controllers very flexible. Stereo layers eat up two polyphonic voices (naturally).
These days the prices on one are too good not to have one on your rack, and the sounds are diverse, accurate and great to listen to.
