The sp-12 is a lovely, simple to use machine. The sound is nice and dirty (like always mentioned) but you can damn near get the same sound from the Emax-se (or the HD) racksampler. 1.2 seconds is plenty for drum sounds, but if you can get an sp-12 turbo for a decent price, snag it up! I have to admit tho, it is a little overpriced. I got mine for a great price so I'm not complaining, but I wouldn't spend $1000+ for an SP-1200 just for it's sound. I got my emax-se for $125.00 on ebay. The sequencer is simple to use. Actually, it doesn't get any easier than the SP series drum machines. I looked at the PDF manual briefly and I'm comfortable with it already.

I have finally got an SP-12 Turbo. Believe the hype, it sounds beautiful and has a lot of character...It swings madly. Don't listen to all the people who say it's outdated - 5 secs of sampling time is a blessing in disguise!! I sold my MPC to get one, perhaps it's like comparing apples and oranges but I would have SP-12 any day over the MP.

There are 2 pieces of gear that I'd never sell from my studio... My SP-12 turbo and my RE201 Space echo!
I bought mine back in 1994 for £400, sold it in 1997 for £850...missed it loads so advertised in the wanted ads in 2002... and bought back the exact same model from a completely different part of the U.K with my drum samples still in the machine for £300!!
By the way... is it only my SP that emits a random little electro-fart now and then!? I've had 2 and can't remember whether the other did these sneaky little bum-buscuits! Kind of got used to hearing it every 5 minutes while I'm using it!

I first saw it in a musicians forum from my country, then i contacted the owner and checked personally the unit...next day i got i loan apaid it in cash and... Well i`ve been using my SP-12 Turbo (OS 2.4)for a month and the only thing i could miss is an internal 3.5` floppy drive. Apart from that it is a great machine with very warm and "old school" sound. I bought it used for U$280 aprox. Now i`m waiting to connect it via midi with some other gear like a sampler (hope to get an expanded s950) Great tips are available at www.emulatorarchive.com, that site is better than the user manual. An important thing i read about it is that OS 2.4 has a decay or tune range selection on setup/specials(#23)/dk-tune range(#20)That tool permits you to select the range of work of the tune/decay considering it could be: HI-MID-LO. For instance for tunning a sampler you could be able to down-tune your sample 3/4 of an octave more than the range of the slider. It means that considering that MID is the default decay/tune range with the slider,now you have two extra 3/4 of octave to tune/decay it lower or higher than then center(mid)default tune range...WOW! Las thing i read is that the same OS was now able to dump samples via midi but i cant try it now, if someone knows something about it i`d be happy to share sp12 experiences...

I bought my SP12 for 50 quid of a geezer with a big belly and a smelly front room. He said it didn't work and it had been the shed for a while. He started going on about it being broken and useless, chatting about RAM processors being faulty and all, I snatched the SP off him and aimed for the door. After a bus ride that seemed like eternity I was home. A quick clean up, dust and memory clear and I'm playing on a turbo charged, 8 working button and slider SP12. It rocks. It is currently set up to my drumulator and akai X7000. Seen.
