Quite simply the best drum sampler ever made,i even rate it higher than my akai mpc60,you must get the turbo upgrade(5.2 seconds sample time)big sound,i tink i will be buying the emu emulator2 next for a total retro setup. PEACE

Read my post on the previous page...you can ERASE the 18 drumulator sounds and replace them with samples, giving you 32 user sample spaces! : ) Download the manual from emulatorarchive.com and go to page 39...

Just purchased a sp12 turbo with commodore 1541 drive. Heres my unbiased review> First of all i was quite taken back how big this machine is as i hadn't seen one before,the build quality is excellent i noticed that the sliders are mounted on metal runners unlike a lot of plastic ones they use today. As for the operating system it is a breeze to use the machine i have is running on operating version 2.04,i particulary liked using slider 1 to edit truncate samples. With the upgrade my machine has exactly 5.0 seconds of sample time which i have realised is plenty of time to store a adequate amount of user sounds(even more if you source beats of vinyl using the old pitch up then slow down sample technique. I found setting up the sample input at 40+db yielded the cleanest sounds,however one of the thing i dont like about this machine is listening to the source sample as you are sampling only gives you a rough guess what your sampling producing a almost distorted output,anyway now for what it sounds like well i have to say good but not as good as some of the people have commented on this page,its sound is warm and fairly rounded not as digital sounding as a akai s950 however because i own a 950 i decided to do a a/b comparison. setting the s950 sample frequency the same as the sp12s sample frequency i sampled a tr909 bass drum and tr909 open hihat,the first thing i noticed was the s950 produced a slightly digital edge as oppossed to the sp12 which i outputed on channel 1's lowpass filter,i then outputted the kick drum on the sp12's dry output and to my amazement and this is only my opinion the akai sounded harder bearing in mind that i had matched the gain on both machines while sampling and playback,the sp12 sounded quite wooly and fairly noisey(the lowpass filter obviously removing abit of noise and low end punch,i tried the same test with tr909 snare drum which when filtered through output 4 then ouputted dry again produced the same results. I then used a moogerfooger lowpass filter connected to my akais output the tr909 kick drum when slightly filtered and drivin produced apart from abit of noise almost exactly the same effect,what am i saying here i will elaborate if you can afford and have space to house this machine buy one its a joy to use and its sequencer is a doddle to get your head around(the reason i think this machine is so well liked)however do not believe the hype regarding this machine it does sound good but not amazing,if you currently own a akai s950 stick with it and consider buying yourself a moogerfooger or simliar filter pedal/module. As i said earlier this is just my opinion but bear in mind i do now own one of these machines so no misinformed replys please..

First thing, the SP-12 turbo is awesome! I use it in conjunction with Reason, and the combination is very powerful. I simply record all the sounds from my SP-12 into my computer using Sound Edit 16. I'll cut up a sound and then I'll input the sound into Reasons "redrum" drum machine module. The effect is like having a software version of the SP-12. Also, I use the SP-12 as the midi master to control Reason. I could use Reasons sequencer, but I like the "swing" quality of the SP-12. All of this is done on a Mac G3. It's a wonderful trick. It's like having a SP-12/1200 with ulimited amount of sample time. Just some useful info for you all.
