Got mine new in 1989/90, had to fit the update later (a nice homework - change ESP & calibrate some voltages). Loved it for poly pressure and good sounds, but hated the calib errors...

@gary - there is a way to fix it, the failure is caused by a connector splitting the keyboard. These connector gets weak contacts and the keyboard controller sees this calib error. Beside the Ensoniq suggested way, to drop the unit down from 15cm above ground, its easy to fix it with a little solder done to this connector. It´s a good time to replace the batterie, too.

Gary Anderson a part-time user from United States writes:
Bought in 1990. Have wrote many songs on it that you can hear on 1forhim.net. I love the disk drive for storage. Many great sounds. Didn't like the many crashes then and the keyboard calibration errors now. Strings don't sound to good. But for the years I've had it without to many problems and for the year it was made in, says a lot about the keyboard.

Neil a hobbyist user from UK writes:
I have owned my VFX since the early 90s. This is a programmer's synth - the shipped sounds are very mediocre but get into the machine and program it: The VFX uses true wavetable synthesis only found elsewhere on Waldorf machines and before it the PPG Wave. Matrix modulation found on Oberheim machines and filtering (with resonance) of its digital waveforms - Roland, Korg & Kawai weren't offering this at the time. A unique sounding synth if you learn how to use it: Big fat anologue basses (stack and detune those oscillators!), metalic hits that give a DX7 a run for its money. The most amazing anologue strings - I got mine sounding exactly like a Jupiter 8. The machine also employs LA synthesis (though not aparent or even advertised) so you have a perfect emulator of a D50 here - without that awful Roland noise you got as the waveform closed up. If you see one; snap it up.

I just added my SD to the family. It is a respected keyboard in my studio. The sounds and the feel are "Top Gun."
