the early ensoniq synth and samplers are notorious. i owned 5 different products(except the dp4) since 87 'til now:eps16plus rack sampler,esq1.esqm,vfx and asrx.only the asrx has no problems. and the eps16plus rack i used it w/ a voltage stabilizer/line filter that can keep in running w/o faults.other 3 was sold quickly 'coz it's damn things to use despite they all got warm sound.there's no exception for the vfx,key calibration is a must for every old ensoniq synths but always broke down no matter u calibrate it or power it on again at any times. the worst case only appeared on vfx was the noisy and clippings on all programs, i read other posts and verified its not my only unfortune.so i'm glad that i sold it very quick after i bought it in 93.thank god.

I bought one of these things two days ago and I have hardly stopped playing it yet. I managed to get the VFX-SD which is basically a VFX with sequencer, floppy drive and an expanded set of wave forms. I confess I absolutely love this thing and I cant think why I never used Ensoniq before. The sounds are great especially the pads you can get, really ethereal and stirring. The 'Digi-Piano' patch is an almost exact match to the classic Roland Digital Piano sound. The E.Ps are great for doing DX7 style sounds but forget about anything resembling a Fender Rhodes (unless you know something I dont). I love the drum sounds, the string sounds, in fact every sound on here is worth trying. The acoustic pianos are not so great but they are convincing enough in a live situation. The only dissapointment is the case which is made of plastic. It does keep the weight down but means that you have to treat it with kid gloves so make sure you have some kind of flight case if you want to take it on the road. Apart from that, absolutely superb. I would give it 5 out of 5 but the plastic case means I will drop one point.

When I first bought the VFX in 1990 I thought it was the most user friendly and action packed board ever invented. Alittle pricey ($2000 at the time) but the features were worth it. It worked great as a midi controller, and certainly could hold its own in a pro studio atmosphere. Too bad the fun did'nt last. Constant calibration errors, sound glitches and processing board failurs put in the repair shop more times than I can remember. It's down again and I'm looking for a main board for it. Got one? Let me know. When this synth is running correctly, it's still my favorite.....

I've been using a VFX-SDII since 1990. Even though I've "updated" to other keyboards & software sequencers, I just cant break loose from the VFXsd. I can sequence in the dark & put a whole song faster than I can turn my pc on & get my cubase up & running (which is what I'll use for more detailed editing & saving sequences in a universal format). It does crash a lot so I have to save frequently. The sounds have a lot of character. I get alot of compliments on my brass & string sounds from my sequences which I record to minidisc & play with a live band. It really cuts through and I take the compliments especially seriously when they're from horn players. Most of the sounds I use are third-party or self-programmed. If you own a lot of roland, korg, yamaha gear, the vfx will definetely contrast in the mix.

The good: unique sound that only ensoniq has.
The bad: piece of CRAP Operating system.. buggy and crashes randomly. Very unstable.
