I am new to this mirage.. I would like info on such basic things as making a backup boot disk! I would like info on the programming (machine language or hex code) of the system. Perhaps it would be possible to develop a bios that would make the use of 3.5 hd disks possible. Any source of info would be appreciated

It's STILL THE ONE. The Mirage makes sounds like nothing else. It's at the center of everything I do. Even though the sampling time is limited, I use the Mirage to construct the sound I'm looking for, and then resample the result. There is nothing, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, that sounds like the Mirage. Use it to create your own sounds at its lowest sampling rate, and you will see exactly what I mean.
Is it hard to use? Yes. Is it old and limited? Yes. But unless you have a Fairlight Mk 1, you will simply be unable to make the great lo-fi sounds that rock your world. Get the keyboard version, and then get a rack version to play back the sounds you're making. If you're into weird, cool, and distinctive sampling, get the Mirage.
There is no substitute.

Hey these are great machines,really lofi sounds.Sample your drums into this and they become like grit.Really nice analog filters that are so smooth and allow the creation of some lovely sounds,just add a bit of reverb or delay and your away.Everyone says about the operating system being tough well it is not,it just takes a little bit of practice,get the advanced sample guide and you will be fine.The fact that you can store your creations on disk is also cool,memeory wise not so good and at its highest sample rate you will get a about a 2 sec sample but when you use lower rates you get more sample time and the samples ened up being grittier.
I find the person who says it is not as good as an sk1 absolutely hilarious and should have his own comedy show.
lets have a look at the facts sk1 no midi,no way of storing sounds for instant recall,no analog filters,no way of mapping sounds to keygroups,small keyboard,no memory allocation to samples so you just have to go with what its got.
mirage has midi,has disk storage,keyboard mapping,allows user to specify sample lenght,large nice keyboard,true analog filters and lfos,true analog adsrs for both filter and amp,variable sample rate.
so there you have it,iknow which one i would choose given the choice....a mirage. I suspect anyone would choose the mirage.SK1 better than a mirage he he it does make me laugh that i will give that reviewer that you are funny.

I have two - a keyboard version I've had for years and a rack version I bought recently. Very odd sounds to be had - you can get these mellotron-like effects with slightly overdriving the sampler's line input and using careful filtering while sampling voices. The filters are nice, but, obviously, you aren't going to get the real analgue open-filter sounds because it's a lo-fi digital oscillator. Looping is a pain. A niche item, but I like it.
