I have a question regarding my SD-1. I lost my manual for my SD and now I need to replace the battery. I purchased one on ebay. When I opened my synth, I noticed the new battery was the same as the old one except for the contact points where it must be soldered to the motherboard. The new battery has 2 soldering points while the old one has only one. My question is...is my SD-1 motherboard capable of accepting a battery with two soldering points or must I use one with only one. On my SD's motherboard, there are 3 small points in a row on the positive end of the battery where the original battery is actually soldered to the center point. Can I solder the new battery to the 2 outer points...I mean, is my motherboard capable of accepting either a battery with 1 or 2 positive contact points? I just want to make sure these other 2 points on my motherboard are actually for connecting to a battery before I go out on a limb and possibly ruin the best keyboard ever made. Anyone with any info on replacing the battery will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

I got the VFXSD when it was almost new back in 1991 and thought I had bought a whole studio..24 tracks of sequencing and fx..yahoo! It was my first keyboard, synth and sequencer. I used it as my main controller for years. I own Logic Platinum and a have had a few other sequencers but ..I always just go back to the ensoniq keyboard sequencer. Better for live and I guess I rather read, go to the beach or talk to girls than spend my time troubleshooting a computer sequencer. But hey what about the SD-1? I got my VFXSD in '91 for $1500..and in 2003 I saw a SD-1 used for $100. Happy camper. I think it's quieter than the VFXSD..I think I can use it without a noisegate but the fellow above is right..the VFXSD is too noisy...but my SD-1 just crashed so I'm using the VFXSD again. I absolutly love my SD-1..when it was working..I'll fix it...soon I hope. Looks new..shiney black with red..oohhhh. Helps me make fat tunes! Anyone knows how to fix SD-1 crashes (yes I did reboot softbuttons with OS)send me an email..thanks

I bought my SD-1 used about 8 years ago. I chose it because I had owned an ESQ-1 several years before, and found it to be very versitle and easy to use.
The SD-1 is like a super improved version of the ESQ-1. All of the functions were advanced and refined, but the overall feel of the interface remained. The stock sounds are very good in most cases, and I love the two "performance" patch-alteration buttons. It does have a noisy digital reverb, so I'd recommend going easy on the onboard effects.
I did find parts of the interface confusing at first, in particular the performance grouping of patches and how they relate to the sequencer. Sometimes I end up with a patch that sounds on way when played live and then different (with altered effects) when recorded and played back through the sequencer and I've never figured out why.
For me it has been a very good 'board. I'm a guitarist, not a keboardist, but the sequencer and the sounds are exactly what I need for recording and live playback.

HELP!! I when I got to a gig my SD-1 stopped booting. You turn it on, and the drive light comes on and hangs there. I don't know if it got a jolt during transportation or what. Has anybody had this problem before and if so is it repairable?

I've had an SD-1 since 1991, bought new, used extensively for songwriting and recording. I'm not a keyboardist (bass player), but the sequencer in this machine made me an instant empressario! The sounds, with few exceptions, are intensely true to their multi-point sampled originations, though cymbals are a little thin, and my particular unit has a nasty habit of making noise at the end of a piece that decays in approx 1 second, almost like a noise gate with the threshold set wrong...I compensate with a gated compressor, but that doesn't always work.
The piano sounds are awesome...
