I had one of these for a while, but I sold it when I moved and I've regretted selling it everyday since then. This is a great all-around tool for creating many of styles music. The easy user interface, the very flexible and powerful sound engine, the little sequencer, it's robust build quality... quite a combination, but it is more than the sum of it's parts. The sound is quite unique. Very meaty and dirty sounding but it also excels at airy pads and sparkly bell leads. I'm still looking for another one, but I keep finding SQ2s and TS10s instead at the music store. Hold on to yours is all I can say. If you're not satisfied with the sounds, then keep digging, because it will give you what you want. You can dig and dig and dig for sounds and still keep coming up with gold. That's one of the nicest things about the Ensoniq ESQ1. And if you're having problems like the last reviewer is having, that means the battery is dying. I bought a new one for 30 bucks at Radioshack and you have to unsolder the old one from the board and resolder the new one in place. It's a 20 minute job, and well worth the effort to keep your beast alive.

I've had multiple ESQs over the years. And this is one of the most under rated synths around period! Can do some of the best string/pad sounds then do some of the nastiest dirty sounds you're likely to hear. But over a year ago, mine has developed a problem. It won't make any sound, and the dislay is all funky. If anyone has run into this and fixed, please let me know how!

In response to the last reviewer, you can get all the Ensoniq ESQ-1 sounds here:

I have the ESQ-M and would say that it (and the ESQ-1) are among the best synth values you'll ever find. It's a analog/digital hybrid (like some other notable mid-80's synths e.g. Prophet VS, Korg EX/DW 8000). It has analog filters and (I believe) analog envelopes along with 32 digital waveforms.
Overall it has a fat sound (8 bit gritty) and my only complaint is the occasional note stealing.

This is an extremely exciting keyboard to use. There are not too many keyboards in Zambia. this is among the best here. Only problem is that the sounds are out-dated. I would like to know where I can source sound cartridges for this keyboard.
