Though I have not had the pleasure to play one, I have read up on it and listened to many sound samples so I figure that this peice of history deserves a review. This thing is ancient in synth terms. This is truely the very first commercial synthesizer. Made from over 100 vaccum tubes, this thing could very well be confused for an organ but trust me, this is not. You've probably heard this a time or two and just didn't realize it. Back when this was released, people had no idea what to do with it so it was inappropriately used as a theremin sound type device. In fact, the only place I heard a very good sound from it is from Phil Cirroco's restoration website. After a complete rebuild of all the tubes, discrete circuits and cleaning of toxic residue, he gave this wonderful instrument its proper due. Soundwise, it is beyond anything I have ever heard. More then just warm, it seems to fill the spectrum with very haunting, very beautiful sounds. That and the fact that it was FULLY POLYPHONIC and released in the 1930's makes it head and shoulders above most of those proto synths of the age. Again, dont confuse this with an organ like most people have, this is very much a synthesizer and it needs its credit. In closing, this thing is old, but it sounds different then anything I have heard and it is absolutely beautiful. Go to the CMS site and look at the restoration and for some sound samples. You might just be suprised.
