I have owned three 1080 and two 1010. Now I have fully expanded JV-1080 and I love it. Expansion cards are great. I have analog/VA/hybrid/wavetable and JV is my only true samplepb synth beside sampler(PC). Well programmed it can sound close to the analog, just select right waveforms and use carefully that resfilter. One of the best buy for the low budged musician/programmer. Expansions are way expensive. I sold my Yamaha A3000 sampler and got JV. It's just too slow to mess with sampler (without harddrive+flash) when you get the idea (don't get me wrong, sampler is must for most musicians including me). JV is good basic workhorse and when some expansions added, its great. I love strings/pads. Feel free to mail me (from that page).

Hi everybody, I've buy a used JV 1080 in1998 with two expansion board (PIANO and VINTAGE) . I'm overall a gigging musician (Blues, Rock, Funky, Acid Jazz, Jazz) and all I can say is that JV 1080 is greatest music mule ever made, surely is the best ROMpler, with a wonderful sound quality in almost all kind of instruments at a very affordable price (you have also 4 auxiliary output). It's a really Modern Classic. If you want good general sounds usable in professional context the JV 1080 is perfetct, better than all the other, with the warm of the Roland souds... You can find an optimum assortment of pianos (both acoustic and electric), organs, violins and so on, I have used it for long time for all the purpuse, now in my set there are a Gem Pro2 (Digital Grand Piano with incredible Electric pianos), the Roland VK7 (an almost perfect B3, I love it) and a Roland JP 8080 (Fantastic Analog leads and the warmest Analog Strings, mmmh), so the role of the JV is now smaller, but indispensable. I have listed my set to explain my tastes... But if you want to program your own particular sounds look in other directions... In geneal, considering the sound quality, the variety of sounds, the expandibily, the 2 pairs of additional output and, never forget in evaluating instruments, the price ('cos now you really can find a lot of JV1080 at a very good price), I can give him a full 5. I beg your pardon for my english...

the jv series is for the mainstream thing,a easy to use and ready to use commercial music workhorse.yes,maybe the sound is supreme,but it survive and make many commercial musician/composers/arrangers survive.i also earned some money by using its sounds ,and even sometimes depended on one or two roland jv synths w/ exp boards.we all know its limitation but it still works for the mainstream's ears,its reality.i bought one brand new for $1300 in 94 to accompany my jd990(not enough polyphony and sound variety),and it worked.later its replaced by the 2080.really,newer roland jv got worse sound quality but more precise functions than the older ones,even i felt the jv880/jv1000 sounded better on bass/low freq than jv1080/2080.don't laugh. w/ 4 exp slots,its good,if u really installed 4,its 4,none of those boards,its only got 3.

Get the jv1080. It's a better synth. It's a real workhorse. You can get any sound you want out of this machine.
