I argree with joe - a friend of mine had one and its very unfriendly to program - quite frankly its out dated - you should not have to pay for ROMs - it not very. Get a DX7 if you like programming.

Despite the fact that the JV2080 has come out, this module is still very versatile and great sounding. I own this machine since about 2 years and I have never used all of the 64 voices...One of the best features,I think, are the 4 types of filters, which you can also use on the drumsounds and expansionboards. I use the JV1080 mainly for drums/pads sometimes bass while I use my JP8000 and Nordlead for leads and sounds that need to be tweaked in realtime.For me, this is a great combination. The JV1080 is still getting cheaper, so get one soon!

It's very exciting to buy a synth that's been around for five years, and find it still sounds vital and new. I've used JV/XP synths many times, and finally got around to getting my own. The 1080 has that Roland crispness and clarity that records so well, but anything said about the sounds now is just redundant. Everyone knows how good they sound. With the expansion boards coming out all the time, and the fact that you can get the boards now for about $175. apiece, this will be a workhorse in my rig for some time. My TR rack has a sexier sound, and other synths I own have more personality, but for meat and potatoes, nothing touches the JV's. I went for the 1080 instead of the 2080 because of the reported noise at the tail end of samples on the 2080, the price, and I already have a JV1010 with the extra 2080 patches and Session board already in it.

I own 2 JV1080's! They have inspired me to be musically creative. Also I ran out of expansion board space in the 1st one! I own 7 expansion boards- orchestral, bass%drums, vintage synthes, keyboards of the 60s/70s, techno, hiphop and session. It has a powerful synthesis architechture with 10 different structures for arranging the oscillators differently. The internal waveforms are mostly great and I love the MIDI syncable LFO's and effects. Sonically, the JV has a great full sound. It's only weak links are the stock acoustic pianos and drum sounds but this can be fixed by buying choice expansion boards for whatever style of music you create. Overall I can't rate this synthe highly enough. Anything that could have been improved has been fixed up in the JV2080 which I will buy one day. THIS IS A CLASSIC SOUND MODULE!!!!
