I was looking for a good general purpose synth to use as part of a live performance rig. When I looked around alot of people were recoomending the JV1018 so I went along to my local synth shop and purchased one. I was expecting a good all rouder and I got a brilliant synth. The best I have heard yet. the quality of the sounds are excellent and there are so many to chose from. expansion is great and if you still need more sounds you can create your own. Ease of use is excellent. It took me about 4 hours to find my way around the various concepts and settings. Well worth the money!

Excellent rack synthesizer. Marvellous synthesis capabilities. Great filters,
LFOs sync to MIDI clock, delay lines speed in BPM, effect is saved with the
sounds, no separate - confusing - FX bank. Great expansion possibilities.
Together with a good sampler (i.e: the Akai S-2000) and a good sequencer (i.e:
Atari Mega with Cubase) it makes a perfect setup. At least for me. I make house
music, as well as play around with techno, ambient and goa styles. The 1080's
no-compromise system allows me to do WHATEVER i want for the day. For me, this is the best synthesizer ever.

I love this machine!
I bought it in November 1996 (seven months ago) and I still can't get over how big this thing sounds. My other synth (which I use as a controller for the 1080) is a Korg M1, which I love, but there's no comparison between the two as far as sound quality goes.
I bought the "Keyboards of the 60's and 70's" expansion card when I bought the module, and it's priceless - filled with fabulous B3 organs, wonderfully tweezy combo organs, pianets, Rhodes pianos, Wurlitzer pianos, Mellotrons, and various and sundry other such dinosaurs. I play in a 60's band, and these sounds have become invaluable to me - for songs such as "Gimme Some Lovin'", "96 Tears", "Nights In White Satin", "Lucky Man", "Light My Fire", and others, the authentic sound was right there (in a couple of cases a tiny amount of tweaking was required, and I emphasize tiny).
Only a couple of complaints - the stupid display is no better than the one on my beloved ol' M1, which dates back to 1988, fer Pete's sake, and also I wish you could get more than one insert effect. With the wonderful distortion and rotary speaker effects available, it's a shame not to be able to use them together. Now that I think of it, the operating system is not as clear as it might be, but it's not real bad, either.
My only regret is that I couldn't afford to go a little higher and get the 2080. Sigh.

I bought the 1080 to replace a tired Yamaha TG500 and also to act as a basis to work alongside the Analogs. I`ve never been a big Roland Digital fan least of all the JD800 but the 1080 is probably the best cost effective allrounder to date (and that includes the 2080 which only adds extra effects and board slots for a lot more money). The orchestral board in amazing, easily in Kurzweil terratory, you can actually create convincing "virtual orchestras". the Vintage board pales a bit when you compare it to the real things but is good enough for live work and saves lugging heavy analog polys about and`s useful for those complicated pads you need occasionally. I hate the TVA,TVF EG system (typical Roland fare), but at least on the 1080 you can see more info. Onboard FX are good but these days separate DSPs for each part should be implemented (even the 2080`s three is too much of a compromise) but is the norm even these days. The outset is that the 1080 is one excellent basis / Workhorse and (even it`s original price) offers far more bang for buck than anything else.

The Roland JV-1080 is truly a superior synth module. It is definitely worth the money. Its' sounds are heard virtually everywhere (jingles,TV shows,movies,etc.)
I especially liked the vintage synth expansion card; very nice approximations.
With the creative control it has to offer & its given sonic palette, it is a phenomenal machine.
