in 89 i bought the k1 at $450,it's a bargain at that time,'coz many synths around costed at least $850-$1000,such as roland d20.on my budget i only had another choice,d10 when i bought the kawai, but i liked the k1's fat(but quite noisy) pcm samples than the thinner linear synth from d10.8-part multi is good enough at that time.one year later i also bought the desktop module ver. k1m,it's the same as k1 w/o the keyboard,i paid $350 for it.a little bit dated today though, but u can really get one very cheap on 2nd hand market today.it's a very good synth for beginners.

Ed MacLean a part-time user from USA writes:
The Kawai K1 is great if you create your own sounds which I do, The only problem is I don't own a manual and can't save what sound I created. Can someone please give me instructions on how to save/write sounds. Please be as specific as possible. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

Update from an earlier review. I bought my first K-1 new in 1988. I have just purchased my second - a K-1m module. It cost me $90 at ebay.

I am going to order two batteries from Kawai. I have lots of synths - but I hope my K-1's never die.

Eric Thacker a hobbyist user from US writes:
I'm not a fan of the default patches on this synth. However, making patches and running them through an effects processor such as a distortion pedal of some sort can make for some really cool distorted sounds. This is a good low-cost synth to experiment with on working out new sounds.

My first k1 i bought about 6 years ago for 250$. I thought it was good at the time. GREAT string sounds but a lot of processor noise. The piano's are reall cheasy but i dont mind because i have an e-mu proformance piano module which serves that purpose. THe electric piano sounds arent bad if u mess with them. The sound fx are unique and interesting. you can get some good sounds if you look at synthzone.com and search through the links.
