In 1988 I purchased a Kawai K1, Kawai K4, and a Kawai Q80 sequencer. I cherish all these instruments. They are still kicking ass after 11 years. If you can pick them up....do it. You won't regret it. Have fun!!

Now the Kawai K-1 can still kick some butt in this day and age. E-mail me and I will send you some sounds that will make your K1 talk. This thing is really stong in the pad type patches and has some pretty good retro 80 sounds. You cannot use a K1 to play realistic piano, guitar, sax, or any instrument like that but for synthetic type sounds you can rock the house. A keyboard player cannot rely on just the keyboard sounds to right a sizzling hit. The keyboard player needs to know how to play the sounds. Dave Stewart of the group Erythmics played $15 Walmart special keyboards in some songs proving that not just the keyboard makes the player but the player makes the keyboard.Contact me for some hot K1 sounds

I bought my K1 purely as a master midi keyboard for my S2000 sampler. I soon discovered (like everybody else apparently) that the string pads are ever so sweet and soft, however, so now I have started to fiddle around with the wave forms. To get rid of the awful 8-bit noise, I sample the K1 waves into the S2000 and then I turn the resonance filter down to about 90. Really does the trick. (Does anybody have the manual with all the wave settings? Drop me a line in that case, please!) Anyway, the box is pretty useless as it stands. Im not into synths imitating real things anyway, and these sound are nothing near acoustic instruments. Only, it didnt occur to me that the K1 can be used for "psychedelic" purposes, as some commentators have found out. Maybe I need to take a closer look at it and return with a higher mark (ie if I can get some real noise out of it).

I paid $50 for mine about a month ago. I just spent 4 hours cleaning the hell out of it. I replaced the badly corroded battery, and now it works like a champ. This is not by any means an analogue synth. No filters. It's great for wierd digital synth noises. Great pads & strings as well. Does anyone have the waveform lists? I don't have a manual, so i don't know what all the waveforms are called. If so, please e-mail me a copy. Thanks.
