The K-5000R is the little secret in all my compositions and SFX's. I use a Voyetra-8, Micro Wave,Micro Wave XT, and Mini-Moog as well as various Kurtz and E-mu sample playback modules. Everything has its special or "ballsy" sound, but the K-5000R has the most unique and sonicaly pleasing quality to my ears. Great control, and the PCM and additive editing provides for very creative sound development.

Forgot to mention the only problem i've had with this synth was that soon after i bought it new in 1998, the screen died. Basically everything went blank and I had to wait 3 months for a replacement part from Japan. That was annoying and I wasn't that impressed with Kawai.

Great synth, I use it as my master keyboard and the arpeggiator rocks! There is no real great need to go into what it sounds like, others here will describe it better than me. In terms of using its sounds in my music I don't use it often but when I do, put it this way its not sitting in the background.

THIS SYNTH WOOPS THE DONKEYS ASS-sorry had to say that. It's like a wavestation on mescaline-plus that funky formant filter which I have no idea how to program but it sounds fab. I've not yet even made my own patches cuz i'm spellbound by the presets (???;) I also own an e-mu morpheus, yamaha fs1r, and korg z1 for digital synths.. this thing is able to recreate (well to a point) some of the same sounds as those.. so why do I need them? ;] In a nutshell.. if you get only one DSP synthesizer, get this one.

If you're looking for a synth to add a new flavour to your studio, this is it. The price these units are going for is outrageous. I paid $700USD for mine and I don't regret it at all.
Physically: The build quality is superb. It looks way cool with the brushed aluminum casing. The keyboard action is wonderful, and the multitude of knobs, dedicated wheels and user buttons are like a musical amusement park.
Musically: There are many reviews already here which describe the K5000S's potential better than I can. Generally, the sounds are unlike any other synth I've ever played. I am somehow continually reminded of the mid-80's Wave PPG when I play my K5000S -- a similar organic, bright, quirky personality. However, the K5000S can alternately create the most etheral xanadu sounds one moment, and then the next patch is a frightening demonic growl from synth hell! What a machine!
Bottom line: this synth is really destined to become a true collector's item, in the same way that keyboardists nowadays lust over Jupiters and Moogs, etc. Think I'm kidding? I feel this is no exaggeration. Here's my reasons:
#1 Powerful, Fantasmagoric Additive Synth Engine #2 Limited Production #3 Esthetic Appeal (it just looks cool) #4 Real-Time Performance Versatility
Best wishes to all.
