I just picked up a K5000W from Musician's Friend for $750! This baby is a dream come true. The sounds are amazing even without the knobs(the W doesn't have 'em). Take the time to explore the touch sensitive effects. These sound "LIVE" under your fingers. There are subtilties to these sounds that are soooooo expresive. The sequencer is a snap to use. I can't imagine using all 40 tracks. The sounds are so lush that 3-5 tracks really fill up the space and then you can add a few more tracks for drums. Yes the W has about 10 different drum sets and a GM bank. When I get bored ;) I can jump into the additive synth, but for now, I'm happy playing with the presets and downloading patches from the web.

Got rid of my buggy Yamaha EX5 (nightmare) and bought the K5000S from the SAM ASH blowout. I already owned a K5000R so I knew how nice it would be. I have to say I definitely do not regret the decision. The controller works well, is solid and well made. The arpegiator is very nice. All in all just what I hoped it would be. The bonus is that I am using alot more of the K5K series on my new CD project than I thought I would so the increased polyphony of two units is a real plus. The K5000 Series complements my Kurzweil K2500R and my Novation Supernova very nicely. Now if I only had a Korg TR-Rack it would be icing on the cake.

When I first heard it at the store, the k5000 did not impress me but for $450 it really didn't have to. When I got that baby home and started twisting those knobs and the like, I'm telling you I was in synth heaven. To build patches is pretty complex, and the the 4.0 upgrade adds better sounds. This is a steal at $450 if you can find one!
