The R-50e (electronic kit) is one of my favourite Drum Machines. It has a very japanese sound and it the source of Electronic slap-bass, and orchestral Hit samples as well as 100's of 1980's movie soundtracks (Terminator, Robocop, Short circuit, etc.) Also still used in Manga. My Kawai's are all Circuit bent, and are great for Techno sounds.. The machine's pattern memory is limited, but it has decent Midi capabilities which makes up for this shortcoming. ROMS are interchangable between the R-100, so you can swap sounds (Electronic, Acoustic, Latin & R-100). I'll give it 5/5 because I love it's distinctive LO-FI techno sound. It's a slightly limited machine, but doesn't pretend to be anything more.

The site says "1988?", but I bought a Kawai R-50 brand new in the summer of 1987, so it is defenately older than '88. Maybe even from 1986. I don't miss the sounds today. They are too noisy as stated elsewhere. But it is a very easy machine to work with. Just like the Kawai Q-80 sequencer. Roland could learn a lot from Kawai!! And all the drumsounds can be tuned. This is a really kool feature. I have an old recording of the Kawai R-50 converted to mp3, I sometime listen too. A lot of memories comes to my mind when I hear it. I'll rate 3 out of 5 because of the tuning feature. Cheers...

This is a great instrument - if you like strange aliasing noise ;-) I like it very much, because you can create lots of sounds changing the tune. It's very easy to program (compared to my Roland R-5!!).
Tip: Use a Noisegate to reduce the humming & noise the machine produces. This machine needs a little filtering using your mixer EQs. You'll find out that you can use this little thing to produce real strange sounds in addition to other drummachines.

Es cierto que la R50e no suena de maravilla pero los sonidos se pueden entonar se les puede aplicar un poco de efecto y los triger son muy útiles con un modulo de sonido externo. no me desharía de ella por nada!

Being in a Goth band, I love my R50 for its thumpy Dr Avalanche-esque poundingness... However... It's just gone bonkers!!! (that's brit for nuts, looneytunes, mad insane, etc.) After trying to edit a pattern, it started making lots of strange electronic farting noises and seems to have spontaneously deleted all the user patterns and replaced them with bizarre very slow random bangings, cymbals and various other burps. My guess is maybe something has gone worng with the memory battery? or something. If any body has any ideas as to how I can sort it I'd be forever grateful... Email to above address?
