I think it's a great drum SYNTH. The snares are better that "okay" in my opinion, particularly when you pump in some white noise samples or do some ring mod and some serious downtuning. I won't be selling mine any time soon.

Buy it used, tweek it for months, sample it, sell it. It can make some really fantastic kicks, ok snares, but the cymbals are awful so I don't recommend keeping the unit as a primary drum synth. I favor the Emu Procussion as a keeper (I'm keeping mine, sold the XD-5).

Jeremy Springer a professional user from San Francisco Bay Area...USA writes:
Cool synth..I got mine dirt cheap and I must say its kick drums have balls and its snares make tracks come alive, but the cymbals are lame. If you program techno or house, they may be your cup of tea, but for an acid jazz, funk, or R&B guy, I get them from my other modules.

A-ha...well if you don't already have one of these then you've stumbled on to our little secret. If you're tired of people telling you that some piece of gear is the business and it's not, or you buy something hyped up and it's simply dirt in a box then get ready to be enlightened. The Kawai XD-5 is the BEST drum synth I've come across. They say that the Roland R-8 is good? They lie. If you want crazy electronic percussion then you NEED this box. If you're willing to spend $1000 for that 909 kick, then you should be just as willing to dish out $2000 for this..although you should be able to get it for $300! OK, not every sound in this thing is amazing, but the fact that it's more programmable than anything else, you need not worry that you'll run out of deadly hard electro kicks, super snappy techno snares or those shiny 808-style hihats. Believe it when they say Kraftwerk ina box... it's techno/electro ina box...and if you're into industrial then you need this too! Should I go on?

XD5s rock I bought two of them when Guitar center was blowing them out for $200.00 years back. They make some crazy but usefull for industrial sounds, yes the cyballs do suck though. All in all worth every penny!
