What a brilliant synth! I did a review last year, but I'm back for more! I've been experimenting with some of the sound editing featured on the 01/w, and I've found out how to create some truly strange, but cool sounds. On the PROG EDIT pages, there's options to change the actual waveform, so you can come up with some interesting sounds. Analog pad, changed into a double PWM with fade - in random waveforms sounds pretty darned weird, and if you play it through a big amp like I have, you can certainly make your studio move! Admittedly, some sounds on the 01/w can be a bit on the thin side, but if your's into creating SYNTH programs (after all, that's what it is isn't it?), then you can modify your thin accoustic guitar sound into a rich, swirling PWM or something. I woiuld give the 01/w 10 outta 10 for programmability and all that sort of stuff, but since the scale only goes up to five, that'll have to do.

I have been using the O1/W for 5 years and I am about to attempt to replace it, for the second time, with a fully-optioned TRINITY. I used to own an M-1 and I have always thought that the O1/W's ROM was designed to complement, rather than supercede, it's older brethren. It's sounds are different [often not as good] but if you kept your M-1 it gave you a bigger sonic palette which I think is an okay way to go. As for it's lack of resonant filters, I am yet to find any analogue or modelling synth that can emulate it's awesome resonant effects created by applying an envelope to a waveshaper. By using the EXCITER effect to boost the bottom end you can get the most wicked analogue bass lines that will blow you away. I have an ASR-X and a CS1x, both designed to do the analogue thing, and the O1/W can eat them for breakfast. There are some great patches available on the net but here's a tip to give your drums some bite; try applying a waveshaper to them. If you use it subtly you can get some VERY hard kicks happening. The O1/W is the Techno-Terrorists greatest weapon.

A few months ago I took a show to the Edinburgh fringe. As we couldn't afford to take up a band with us I decided to sequence all the music, and bought an 01WFD from a friend. It turned out that the Korg was by far the most reliable thing in the production, never making a single mistake and sounding great every night. As a classically trained musician I would normally cringe at the thought of sequencing as opposed to playing live with 'real' musicians, but the noises this thing can make are fantastic. The sequencer is so easy to use, the range of noises you can make is immense, it is rugged and well built, and it never asks for double pay on a Sunday. In the end, the entire (45 minute) score fitted on one floppy disk, I could keep an entire act in memory, and its ease to set up was a saving factor when it came to the 10-minute get-in each night. I used it intensively (I had to to get the score for the show sequenced in time) and I have never known it go wrong, and as for the criticisms I have read in other reviews, well: a) Yes, it is not General Midi compatible. Get over it. If it bothers you that much then you could spend an hour or so moving the programs round until it is, or go out and buy a toy like a Roland Sound Canvas. b) Why are people slating the piano sound? I think it is fantastic, and makes the piano on a Roland JV1080 sound like a rubber band. c) You can expand this thing with new PCM data cards, if you want Techno sounds and things there are cards on the market.

This machine is so powerful that in general, if you think it doesn't do what you want, you probably haven't tried. For example, in the show we needed a clap of thunder, and the Korg does not have one as a preset sound-effect. (Even my Roland JV30 has thunder, thought I.) In one hour we created a mind-numbing thunder program that had the audience pissing their pants every night.

In general: this thing is rugged, powerful, reliable, and so versatile that I challenge anyone to make full use of its potential.

This was my first synthesizer. I was quite happy with it, mostly because i didn't know what features to look for.

It is a fairly good synth for soundtracks and dull mainstream music (and new age, too). It is, however, worthless when it comes to analog synth emulation because it's filters are crappy and lacks resonance. Also it has got rather limited real-time controls (I'm not happy with that joystick thingy - i want wheels that don't spring back when I release them).

It's a good synth if you don't want it to sound like a &quot;real&quot; synth, though.

Love it - it's the best piece of kit out of my studio - even as a stand alone songwriting tool it's perfect. The whole thing is so versitile - look out for those great patches and excellent wave shaping options. NOT FOR SALE!
