I have messed around with this in the store, and I have to admit I am impressed. I am a big fan of the electribe series, and I have to say that the EMX looks like they have addressed most of the gripes I had about the previous versions. Multiple effects with a decent routing system, multiple outs, longer patterns, etc.. And the tubes do add a nice punch to the sound. The case build is a real step up from the old electribes, it feels a lot more solid and looks a lot cooler, too...
That having been said, I do find the built in samples pretty boring... Its a decent offering of the type of sounds you would expect for most popular electronic styles, but nothing really very interesting. However, the fact that you can alter the pitch and then warp the hell out of the sounds means that you take a semi-usable sound and do some cool things with it.
I am really looking forward to the ESX-1, because the really cool aspects of the EMX are also found in the ESX, except for that you can load your own sounds... but that is really just my preference.
The EMX-1 really does excel as a all-in one beatbox, and the synth section means that you can even synthesize your own drum hits, as with the ER-1. Loof for a patch on the EMX-1 called ER1. The entire patch is programmed with synthed drums from the synthesis section.
Pretty cool...

I have owned all the previous electribes. I really enjoyed them for what they were but always considered them semi-toyish in construction and functionality. I was always left wanting just a little more. I've been waiting for the EMX since it was introduced and have had it for the last week. Everything I wanted in the previous tribes and more is now implemented in the EMX. Reading the specs got me interested but after using and hearing it I am very happy to have it. First and most important is the sound. This thing sounds good with no effects. The sound is crisp clear and dynamic. Add a little cross mod delay into some reverb and you�re in sonic heaven. The VA synth section is awesome with the quality, variety of sounds and new modulation options. Sure you don�t have as many modulation options as some synths but this box is also about simplicity and ease of creativity. The samples range from very usable to barely usable (piano). Second, I can't complain about construction with the metal case and high quality knobs. Yeah, it�s heavier than previous tribes but it won't blow away with the first gust of wind and it feels like it's going to be around for a long time. The quality of the effects ranges from very good to okay. The ability to have 3 simultaneous effects with the routing flexibility is awesome. Third, I love the fact that this thing supports smartmedia. No longer is there a limitation on the number of patterns or songs without having to use external gear like a computer.
Korg definitely eased into the groovebox market with the electribes. They have added more functionality with every new version. This is the first electribe that I feel can be used almost on its own. It will be interesting to see what they come up with next but at least this time I�m not left wanting.

In a world of s/w its something different and something great. It blows away the electribes of yesterday, and will impress you. The tubes really give it more punch and the sounds are more professional. I would check it out, its a great piece of gear.

The best drum module out there right now. I have been using this unit for 2 weeks now and everyday it impresses me more and more.

This unit is awesome. Much deeper then the old electribes,flexible and still simple enough to allow for most creativity. Korg has hit the mark again on this one. If you liked the old electribes, you will without a doubt love this one.
