Make no mistake this is a dance machine all the way. If you want a groovebox but are NOT specifically a dance person, then I think you'd be a lot happier with the ESX-1 sampler. That said, the EMX sounds are very flexible, but always synthetic and definitely NOT analog! In order to get a truly beefy bassline i send it to out 3 through external filterbank EGs and then it sounds like a million bucks. the presets sound great...but have no originality...so my advice is to overwrite all the patterns with a template of your own design. Sounds can be VERY punchy...if you can't make this box sound aggressive you might as well give up! FX are useful but not great. It's the sequencing and real-time tweaks that make this a good box. The tubes DO help smooth out and/or dirty up the output ( 1 & 2 only). Arp is outstanding...synthesis options are vast...filter sounds OK...it'll do about an 85% accurate 303 imititaion...EGs are limited but effective...sequencing is BOMB.

This is the only machine I've ever heard or used that does a great imitation of the hoover sound on my Alpha Juno. The limitation is the synthesis limitation of the user, not the machine. While it is intutitive to operate, getting the sounds you want out of it will require some skill. It does have limitations I don't like in its physical design. The trade off to that is most functions are not hidden in multi-button presses. I'm not crazy about its mono synth function. I stayed away from these Korg units for a long time for that reason. But I will say with 5 synth parts and chord effects, you can phatten up a sound and fill it up quite nicely. Pretty much any dance or hiphop sound you've heard in most popular songs, you can do. Now the production and mixing, heh, that's a different story. But the pre-processed effects does put a nice spit and polish on the sound. From digital to analog to straight up weird, the EMX-1 is capable of delivering a wide range of sounds for the genres it is designed for.
While I tweak it to get the specific sounds I want, I don't mess with the presets much in general. I think they sound great.
While it does lack some functionality and categorization I'm used to, the sounds and effects are a tradeoff (and price) I'm willing to make.
There are certain reviews I avoid. Those that use the words toy and noob and those that criticize presets "the presets suck." These are giveaways of bad reviews. They are usually devoid of any real, valid criticisms, ignore the strengths of the gear and usually reflect that the writer has no real musicianship skill or knowledge of synthesis. If they can't get the sounds they want out of this thing, there's no need spending a couple grand for units like a Virus. Just IMHO.

Absolutely amazing dance machine. Great effects and mod's, and a very intuitive user interface. I HIGHLY recommend this unit to ANY kind of dance musician.

Ok, the E-MX is limited, but lets compare it to the RM1X, i own e'm both. RM1X is very programmable, maybe the only seqvenser, what need in your lifetime, but at the same time it's bit too un-inspiring.
E-MX isn't from the same planet, someone says it's too limited, what i say is that you need a limited equipment and too much time, so you can release your inspiration.
The E-MX is perfect for making music and ideas very quickly. First i play with E-MX, and when i get idea i make blueprint(sculpture the idea on the E-MX), and after that i make it on the RM1x and control with it rest of my equipment.
E-MX is: - Fast - Intuitive - Looks good - Sounds good(for a groovebox)
isn't: - For people who want a full-scale seqvenser - Super hyper poly-synthesizer. (Again the 5 monoparts are very stunning in right hands, if you cannot do a bit, then you should start another hobby, for inspiration study) For the money you pay, i would say it's very good buy. 800€ isn't too much money for this beast(that it is).

Excellent box. Sounds great and anyone who claims to know analog gear (and sound) would know this is a dream come true. This and the esx-1 both have a dream sequencer xox-style sequencing. You can do almost all operations while the sequencer runs live.
The only question is really to buy this or the esx-1 (the sampler). I've got both now (bought both used) and they are awesome. The synth engine is not the most flexible but you are a buying the whole package. A system of working - not a synth. Check out the monomachine - it's synths engines are a bit weak too as far as features but they sound great as does the emx-1.
Here's hoping for an uber-korg box with both emx-1 features plus a sampler and more options on the synth and effects!
