I look at the EMX-1 as a decent drum machine with a very easy to use 8-bar grid sequencer plus 5 monosynths built from various but limited synthesis types.
Sure there are limitations - The big ones: drum parts are PCM samples and there are no ADSR envelopes for the drums or monosynth parts. The modulation section is limited. The pads aren't velocity sensitive.
The good things: The synth oscillator types sound great and do sound very different from one another. The effects are great and there is a lot of variation there as well.
The way I use the EMX-1: I pick the drum sounds and build a sequence. Later I design several monosynths and build a sequence for each. Then I add effects and motion sequencing (24 of these available). When I come up with a good basic sequence, I dump the Midi to Cakewalk. Then I use the EMX-1 as a sound module.
If I come up with a nice sound that I want to use polyphonically, I multisample it (A5000).
For KORG: I would like to see the various synthesis types in the synth section available as drum parts instead of being limited to just the PCM samples. And how about proper envelopes? And 2 LFOs per part with modulation of each destination simultaneously instead of just one? Make the pads velocity sensitive. Add 2 more knobs to the synth oscillator section. Add 20 notes of polyphony to the synth section and I'll pay $1500 for it.

People who call this machine crap! And call themself's "electronic musicains" have zero grasp on how machines like this have changed music and continue to change music not only though the sounds they create, but how they create them & how you the musicain interface with that machine is critical in your success & satisfaction with yourself, your machine, & your music. Sure it does not have all the bells & whistles like a Nord Lead or an Access Virus, and it does not have infinite MIDI tracks with a Hard disk streaming audio files. But it does have 5 monophonic synth parts, and nine drum parts & each part (synth or drum) has it's own velocity triggers. It can send MIDI to other hardware synths and act as a master sequencer. Only fools will speak of an instruments short commings. And only musicans will make music with them.

Hmm, allot of mixed reviews here on the EmX-1. I have got to say that some of the latter posts have little to say about the EMx-1 and speak more about the musicians themself who use this gear. People who enjoy acoustic music will most likely not enjoy this gear, but people who enjoy electronic music will love it. Some people have called this box a peice of crap but already it can do, and sound better than any of those "old school" MC boxes out there. If people don't like it "than fine" but by no means is this a waste of money. I have used Emagic Logic for years with external hardware synths. And I always wanted a hardware Midi patter sequener that could give a solid performance. And the Electribe Emx-1 has been a god send for making music, even though it is made for electronic types of music I find that you can get some of the most amazing results using it alone as well. You can compose complete songs with it, but why would you when you have the option to let this be a master sequencer for you other hardware synths. Some people will argue that software sequencing is better, and in most cases it is true. But having this "hardware" has allowed me to become more intimate with the actual song structure without worring about cuting, copying, pasting etc. I enjoy muisik like Kraftwerk, square pusher, aphex twin, haujobb, download, & skinny puppy. If you enjoy bands like these most if not all of there songs have been based around "analogish" type patternstep sequencing.

Guys please, lets play nice!. If we are gonna establish a friendly relationship between the box, the producer and the listener, we need to cut the trance crap ok?!. With the korg-emx1 it is more than possible to create some amazing electro types of music. Personally myself, i'm into 80's music, jean michel jarre, prodigy and anything which makes a noise. But trance?, no1 likes it anymore, and lets face it, it dosent take a genius to make it. Mr matthews, you was the laughing stock of the night because your music probably sounded the same as anyone else making "trance". Its boring, no1 likes it, apart from monkeys who have no taste at all, you really should ween yourself from trance, techno, drum n bass and garage. The emx-1 has all the features and sounds for what i make, and it does sound very very impressive. Stop following the idea of everyone else and make something fresh "for a change".
