On of the best xox boxes for industrial music period. really great sounds. and has more bars per pattern than other higher priced gear. Some people hear have no idea about what they are talking about, and thats sad because they lower the rating on a peice of gear they dont even own. Just because some people play with the presets and twist a few knobs does not mean that they have hade the chance to get creative with this thing. They just knock it for whatever reason they could think of. And the fact that people keep comparing "virtual analog" to real analog stuff blows me out of the water! Its totally diffrent sound! Not worse or better! People just like to gripe about the newest gear out there for whatever reason! As for me I love it.

Great peice of gear. If you have a computer you won't need to buy a smart card because it supports sysex dumps! As for the rest of you people who give this machine a 1 or 2 you really have not been around gear for a long time like I have been. This machine for the pattern sequencer alone kicks ass and for the money is a great "deal" The sounds are in it's own class and will be a new sound to users who "us it" This is a classic. One of the best peices of gear I own. I also own a Alesis A6, Nord lead 2&3& micro modular, Waldorf pulse, waldorf Q, Elektron Machinedrum es1 & loads of lexicon stuff, and allot of others. My point being that these peices of gear have stood out for along time and I can put the emx-1 next to it and feel fine about what it is, it is not cheap sounding. The em1 was pretty much a toy but for what it was for was great and thats for hammering out beats on the fly in an easy user friendly way that only some other classic's have about them. 5 out of 5. IMO it is the most complet beat box to date.

Overall I found the EMX-1 to be a fun and easy-to-use piece of gear. It sounds good, is pretty tweakable (within the given parameters) and covers a wide range of musical styles. Me? I don't do techno or any of the current dance music styles, but I can see where it would fit right in for those, as it comes with loads of patterns aimed at that market. For my tastes, I did a bit of tweaking, muted some parts, and right off the bat had many usable patterns to muck about with. Granted, the mono synth parts aren't much to work with, but for both the price and for minimalist electronic music, it did very well. It also stood up well for backing tracks to play guitar against (though I had to program what I wanted in - not as immediate as some "jamming" programs - it was much more fun). It does a good job of emulating analog machines and has enough PCM waves in it for the home user to be satisfied, too. The tubes do run voltage across the pins (yes, Dorothy, they do act as an overdrive unit), but I found that part of the EMX-1 to sound much like an old Ibanez Tube Screamer, which is NOT one of my favorite pedals. It gets kind of fizzy to my ears. If you swap out the tubes, you can slightly change the sound of the overdrive (this being a preamp circuit, you cannot change the bias of the tubes). Still the tube output section is a pretty nifty feature that is going to be rather deciding in how many people will look at the EMX-1. I liked it for the most part, but would have prefered the overdrive to be a little smoother.
As I said, overall I like the EMX-1 and would recommend it to most synth users. However, I'm selling mine. Why? Because I know I won't use it to it's fullest and my curiousity is sated. I'm moving on to something else. Whether or not my next piece of gear gets the same response from me, I don't know and I'm sure I won't 'til I've had it a while to play with. I'm pretty lucky in that I can afford to muck about with toys like this. If I had to keep it, I'm sure I would be well satisfied with my purchase and it would see loads of use, both in the studio and (to a lesser extent) live.

This thing rocks. huge sound period. I have no gripes yet as I have owned it for 5 days now. The syths are deep and punchy, and the drums are nice and clean sounding. The DAC's are pretty clear also! Worth the wait and the money. Buy it.

Hey Just bought the EMX-1, really great unit so far! Rocks with the other Electribes too! I love this thing really easy to use and the effect sound great I cant belive there are three effects part to this thing that can be chained in any way! I have no complaints about this one. It's has its own sound to it very digital but turn up the tubes and it gets nasty! sythisizer sounds like the moss board in a triton!
