What Korg calls 'cutting edge technology' basically is a severly cut down MS2000/MOSS engine. This box is quite limited if one looks at it specs indeed. I've spend 4 days reviewing this box before it hit the shops and I must say I was tempted to buy one.

Why? Because it's fun, it's immediate and it sure as hell sounds very good, very polished. But after the initial love at first site wore off I started to dislike it's limitations quite a bit. Not only is the synth engine severely limited, its sequencer, its arpegiator, its drums samples and its fx are all great sounding yet too limited in terms of flexibility and programmability.

The tubes can be easily replaced by nicer ones: the effect on the overal sound is quite amazing if you do. I've tried 3 sets of tubes and all 3 sounded totally different: from agressive and industrial to warm and fuzzy.

I am convinced these will sell as hot cakes though: they're decently priced, they sound great and are immediate and gorgeous to behold. Korg clearly aims this box at the stage musicians AND at those that are on a budget and are in need of a 'quick dose of fresh sounds' in their palette. Most sounds and most preset patterns are very contemporary and *very* well programmed. Some of the best preset patterns I've ever heard.

I am sure I will be able to pick one of these up at a second hand price somewhere from a 16 y/o who got bored after 2 months of preset tweaking.

For half the money or less as they are selling now of course. ;)

David a part-time user from USA writes:
The EMX-1 is an instrument with which a creative person can produce an extremely wide variety of high quality songs and sounds. Because grooveboxes are a relatively new type of instrument, there is a tendency to judge these machines based on what they are not rather than what they are. When you buy an acoustic guitar you don't wish that there were just a few more strings or that you could get a wider variety of sounds from it because you know what to expect from this well-known instrument. You know that even with its limitations you can use it forever and always come up with something new. This is also true of the EMX-1. Some people wish that there were more drum sounds or different drums, but please consider the variety a true musician can achieve with a single drumset. The EMX-1 is an amazingly flexible machine that sacrifices some complexity in order to maximize creative potential with an intuitive and well-designed interface. There are different instruments for different people, but I think that the EMX-1 is a very good instrument for creative electronic musicians.

I think the EMX is a good machine, I've had a loan of one for the past month, it's good at what it can do, nice arpeggiator feature. But I think there could have been a lot more controls like proper envelope controls, user patch saving abilities instead of saving everything to a pattern. Korg's idea of PCM based samples is okay on one machine, but not on a second, what happens when u eventually get bored with them, as I did with my EM-1 and sold it on. Besides most synth manufacturers seem to release a better machine 6-months down the line, thus making you sell your old one for a newer model, spending even more of our cash. I would gladly keep this EMX if Korg had the initiative to allow us users of the EMX to upgrade our machine via software updates ie: New PCM synth samples and drum samples as many synth companies are doing now like Access etc. I give it a 4 out 5 for a few shortcomings it seems to have. did I mention the valve's, wow!! looks like grandpa's old valve radio, kinda!!

Emx got quite powerful synth engine really impressed by that(bit limited with envelopes and editing), dont like drum parts so much pcm samples sound bit weak using er1 synthesis for kick rather and routing through audio in using fx of emx.Wicked all in one machine for fair price
