Man i wish i had this thing back in 1995 working with my akai s-950. Damn it man this screams old school hiphop yes i said it hip hop not sell out rap but that large pro, pete rock, marley marl hip hop .You can do so much with this thing i sync it with a yamaha qy 100 sequencer and get busy .Im old school new york hiphop the effects are a great help to a beat ,you can do a basic mixdown of patters in song mode like on mpc if you put the time in you can drop out samples by turning knobs off and on like old school mixing it makes drums sound fat its like a j-dilla (RIP)machine you can get those types sounds out of the esx-1 its killer no mpc for me playa you can resample your playing, morph samples then resample them. smartmedia yeah but get 3 cards 64 to 128 meg they are out there on line and a card reader and dump stuff to and from computer. now there is software for download on line to edit your smart media info its esx sample manager can tweak your data on computer.IF YOU WANT A SAMPLER THAT REALLY SAMPLES NOT A SOFTWARE SO CALLED SAMPLER THAT DOES NOT SAMPLE ANYTHING YOU WANT AS SOON AS YOU HEAR IT LIKE A( COMMERCIAL ON TV,OR RADIO STATION SONG buy this thing because that is what hip hop is about catching that hot sample as soon as you hear it chopping it and making that heat man im proud to own this machine.

Beyond the Groovebox
I've had an sr16, esi32, pma5 and Rebirth and this crushes 'em all by miles. Combined with my filterbank I don't even fancy the 909 anymore. This is quite simply THE way to fine-tune each and every aspect of your drum sounds. Pitch, EG, modulation,pan, amp, LFO((!!!), filtering, FX etc. Being able to build layer upon layer of knob moves and Modulation is a godsend....it's a lot like having a PCM monosynth on every track , infinitely tweakable. Not as deep as many synths, but then this is not a synth it's a rhythmbox. The 2 synth parts are limited to simple melodies, basslines and arpeggios- not very powerful but still useful and for a box this price it's a bonus. Everybody (that doesn't have one) will dis the tubes but I'm glad they're there - even the crappy stock tubes add some welcome girth and grit. My gripes are few: The sample management system is slow and clunky. Stereo samples can only be used for specific parts - NOT much of a problem since this is a rhythm box, not a workstation. For hip-hop, house & techno, this box is extremely useful.

This is a really good machine solid build quality a sampler with features of a synth it allows allot of creativity as far as maanipulating sounds, and creating changes in music.
The samples sound clean but warm and the tube add alot of depth and enrgy to the sound. Im using this for hip hop and u need to set the machine to 32 steps and 4 measures otherwise ur likely gonna end up with some stiff sounding drums.
The main things missing from this unit r a usb port to transfer samples from computer and a wave editor scr would also b welcome.
But in summary a machine that will put the fun back into music making and allow u too make release quality music full of neat tricks and sounds almost by accident.

Forget the mpc - THIS is the beatbox! best sequencer around and knobs, knobs, knobs to twist the sounds.
mpc = static beats. esx = tuned, tweaked and awesome.
effects are decent though more params would be nice. still way better than the week effects on the mpc.
and korg - how about some lfo -> sample start and end points! loop point controls?
look past the mpc's pads and see how weak it is! if you want good beats you need to be able to program it then start adjusting each sound until the whole thing is right. with the esx this is easy with the knobs. mpc - menus? no thanks!

Got all the old electries and now this, it kicks ass ppl, it th best sampler to use if you like Venetian Snares and Aphex Twin, u can make seriously twisted loops(the pattern sequencer is more advanced and allows time signatures of anything between 16/8 to 1/8) +u can turn 2 sec samples into infinite synths/strings by looping the end.just wanna let u kno if u love the old electribe sampler this is like 5 time better in every aspect; sampling time, effects, song and pattern sequencing.GET ONE
