I had a KAOSS Pad for about a year and then I traded it for an Ensoniq ESQ-1. I only traded it because I had too many whacky FX units laying around (like the MOFX) and not enough instruments.
The KP is great fun, and awesome to run your drum machines through. All in all, it's pretty good.
These are my complaints though: lack of user programability--sure, the 6 presets are nice, but I would like to create my own FX settings that use the XY pad. Also, the quality of the FX was pretty low. I didn't care for the sampling capabilities at all... Also, the RCA connectors and lack of 1/4 inch drove me nuts--having both (like Electrix products) would be optimal.
If you can find one cheap, go for it. They're fun little noisemakers.

It's just a little more than the Alesis Air FX, and alot less than the Roland EF-303, but if you like ease of use, this is your baby. I tried both the airfx and the kaoss pad together, hooked up to a ea-1. I had waaaay more fun with the Kaoss pad, because all I had to do was press and drag on the pad, but with the airfx, I had to wave my arms around it. That's fine if you liked it on the Rolands, but it gets old quick. Plus the results weren't very satisfying.
Not with the pad. I was getting so many new sounds from just one of the pre-sets of the ea-1, and as long as I didn't get too close to the airfx, they sounded great. Wish I could say by owning both, they'd compliment eachother, but sadly, this is not the case.
If you need hands on fx, ease of use, and good sound, and don't want to spend a whole lot, this is your gear! When I can afford it, I'll buy one, perhaps two! Oh yeah, can't wait for the dj mixer.....

I own a studio. Clients like to have wild FX at times. I let them use the Kaoss Pad because it is user friendly, very intuitive, creates a more satisfying experience when a non technical client comes up with "that great sound" they created. It also gives me a break from mixing while I'm still charging for time. You see one can easily get lost for hours playing with this thing. I've had several sessions which were booked just to come up with sounds to sample using the Kaoss Pad. My most profitable investment. I recommend it for every studio! On my personal projects, I do use it and find myself spending an unusual amount of time on it. It's sound is useful for today's dance orientated music. It has a place on the music scene. You just have to check it out like any thing else out there and judge whether it suppliments your needs.

That is what I love most about this device, It lets you be more creative with your effects.. It's better suited for live use and DJ'ing, But can function very well in a studio. I've created some unusual soundscapes and wild delay's that couldn't (IMHO) be created by anything else...
Thing I like: It sounds great, Cheap, Sends controller data out via midi, I have the LE clear black one, Did I say CHEAP, I got mine for $210
Things I dont like: Lack of midi in+thru.. could you imagine the possabilities(syncable delay)..
Only 1 effect at a time (I would love to layer some effect's)
Can't wait for Kaoss 2
