Very good module. I would say that in the 10+ years I have owned my M3R I have been able to record, and play live with it all situations. The Korg M3R is actually a top of the line, profesional piece of equipment made back in the 80's that only the Yamaha DX7 can revial as a classic must have synth. If you can get your hands on this module you will find why it is still in the "user" chat circles and supported by it's fans.

For those of you interested in buying an inexpensive module that has an "expensive" sound... the M3R is for you. If you're looking for realistic acoustic instruments...try the TR-Rack. Although it has the basic Korg setup of programs and combinations, the M3R uses combinations as it's main sounds. You have to go into the edit mode to hear the programs individually.
As far as the sounds go, most of the factory presets are average, so get yourself some 3rd party sounds. Or if you have the patience, do it yourself. The RE1 editor would surely make that task much easier. I've loaded mine up with some sounds from various cards and I love it! I also love the price I paid...a mere $200. You can't beat that. By the way, if the battery goes dead... CHANGE IT YOURSELF! It's a piece of cake.
The M3R fits in nicely with the rest of my gear: KORG 01W/FD KORG TRINITY KORG WAVESTATION EX KORG M3R KORG WAVESTATION SR KORG X3 KORG TR-RACK and a Yamaha PSR-48...for those times when I need a good laugh!!!

RE1 EDITOR - Since there wan't any reviews on this....It's an excellent way to edit sounds in the Korg M3R unit since the display on the M3R is so terse. The unit isn't very big, About the 3/4 the size of a keyboard. It has 6 buttons on the left, 8 below the display, 8 sliders below each button and about 6 buttons on the right. They can be had fairly inexpensively (I paid about $125 for mine). It plugs directly into the back of the M3R (dunno if it works for the M1R). The documentation for the RE1 can be found in the M3R manual toward the back. It's pretty simple to use. The display is blue so it's a little different than the typical green roland display.
It's much better than using the display of the M3R and you can sit it next to the keyboard which is cool (mine on a music stand). The buttons are just like the ones on the M1. I'm glad I got it and would buy it again.
I haven't had any problems with mine.

I bought mine in June of 1999 for $280. I guess I overpaid a little given the current market and the fact that the synth came without the memory cards, but it doesn't mean I don't like it.
Most of the presets are useless (like I'm personally not into combination of acoustic bass and electrical piano) but there are some incredible atmospheric and/or weird sounds which serve as a good starting point for your own combinations. I would say even the drums are OK (you get 4 drum kits) if you tweak the EQ and other parameters and add a little rythmic delay and reverb. You can really get some punchy kick drum sounds.
Piano sounds are complete waste.
There are two effect processors which can be used serially or in parallel. IMHO the effectors are good, and the reverbs, in particular, are quite convincing. Having an extra set of outputs is helpful for selective reverb with an outboard unit, very useful for hihats etc in the drum kit.
The synth uses prefabricated PCM wave samples which themselves present fairly complete sounds. In this regard, M3R is different from Kawai machines produced in mid-to late 80s (like K1), where there are dedicated attack portions and an assortment of harmonics for the sustained part. In this respect, you have less creative freedom, but the quality of sounds in M3R is extremely high. I still managed to get some interesting effects using the editor in SoundDiver.
If it dies, I will likely buy another one, mainly because it's an excellent value for the money.

Hello: I'm a guitar player and my relation with the M3R exist because I play MIDI guitar live.Of course, I play electric and acoustic guitar. I have a Korg A2 signal processor for the guitar. My M3R is efective and sounds well. At home I edit and select the sounds with a Atari STE and the software M3R SoftWorkstation of Geerdes Midisystem.I should like to receive information about a editor-librarian for Macintosh, and for patches of "strings","soundtracks" and "piano".Exist a mailing list for suscribe ?
