I really dig this machine. I've had mine for about 5 months now and I only paid 200 even for it. So for the price, I'm toohappy for it. Anyway, the only thing that I really hate about it is that manual. It's so hard to understand. Right now I don' even have the drum sounds included in the 100 sounds. I have no clue how to do it. Also, does anyone know how to combine the sounds? I guess I'm just lazy. Anyway, bottom line is, this synth is great.

Good classic rack.
RELIABILTY: Battery went dead once. Lost all my programs. $100 to replace the battery. Otherwise, no problems.
SOUNDS: Overall pretty good. Sounds have a real gothic feel to them. About half the drum sounds are decent, the rest are so-so. You can definately tell they're coming from a keyboard. I forget how many notes this thing will play at one time, but plenty of times I've had to pull back on an arrangement because it started dropping notes. It's a nice unit to have in a studio, but as a key resource you might find yourself limited.
WORKSTATION / INTERFACE: Hard to conquer at first, but once you understand the way they laid this thing out it's a breeze. The manual BLOWS. Don't even bother reading it.
OVERALL: Good rack with decent sounds. Sells for around $300-$400 US in 1998, good buy for that amount.

I've had the M3R now for 7 years and still use it a lot both in the studio and for live use. I think the potential for creating strange and wonderful sounds is there but sadly I don't seem to be able to have the time to do it justice.
I also use a Yamaha TG55 and I have to say that for quality of sound the M3R comes way out ahead.

I've been using one of these things since they were released back in the 80's. The sound quality is par none with the current technology. Some of the midi effects (pan, expression) were just pipe dreams when this system was released however the M3R makes up the loss by some of it's own special effects such as the fully controllable lesle effect.
Overall, I would buy another if this thing ever dies. It has survived lightning strikes, two years on the road, a tumble down the stairs and being rack-mounted in a sound truck.

The Korg M3r was released as a lower cost alternative to the Korg M1. It was intended for use by those who wanted the M1 sounds, but didn't need the Keyboard or Sequencer.
The M1 was released in 1987, the M3r was released the following year in 1988. Not 1985 as listed on your web site.
