A much nicer synth than I was expecting when I got it for cheap. The signal pathway is mostly analog (except for the timing control on sawtooth core DCO1, and DCO2 _is_ purely digital), with OTA-based 12dB/oct filters which resonate very aggressively. And most of the the internal control signals are analog, too, but with the interface and their coarse discretization, it seems a lot more digital and less intuitive.

If you change that, though, the synth becomes a lot more fun, imo (search Youtube for 'Modified Poly-61' to see what I mean).

I bought mine back when what I really could've used was an sampled synth... which weren't available or were too expensive.

It's really easy to program, but I never was completely happy with the sounds. Unlike the Polysix, it doesn't have onboard chorus effects, so you end up thickening sounds by detuning. I should've just added an FX pedal. I did use a volume pedal with it, especially good on the organs.

So here I was wanting saxophones, trumpets and strings out of it, but only getting meager imitations.

I'll say this for it, it's warm. The Hammonds were very good... and fat. I had a slow rotor and a fast rotor in neighboring patches and the switch to the other sounded pretty good.

My best imitation of an acoustic piano (just fooling around with it one day) ended up with a plausible Wurlitzer. So I added some vibrato to it and kept that.

Overall, my favorite sounds from it were a couple Hammonds, a very warm string sound, mellow horns, harmonica, flutes. Oh, and I had a fluttering synth wow sound that resonated from a high pitch to a low pitch with a long sustain... kind of a cool song ender for a major rock piece.

I've since found sampled keyboards that suit my needs much better.

this synth is fun. its not jupiter6 tho. it does have some character tho. it dosent have midi unless its a m model. however it does have some coolness to it. the keyboard has a very light touch wich is common for budget boards of the day. there is no noise nor any glide or portamento. who cares tho. i mean these can be found fairly cheap. i would say that the bass sounds in it can be very acid and squelchy. adding a few stomp boxes into the chain is fun too. my take on the poly61 is it was a buget synth in its day. there is some limits in terms of tweaking and control it is limited. i do not think this sounds anything like my juno60 nor my jupiter6 or either of the analog akais i have. it has its own sound. there is somethings more than similiar about this board to the poly800. no midi nor a chorus and no noise. its great for td style sounds vangelis sweeps and old school sounds. you can use its apegiator for electroclach style bass lines if you are into that genre easy enough. alot of people say its ugly who cares if it is. i like the way it looks and the way it sounds. i would buy another if i could get it for a hundred and fifty bucks. i got mine with a nice anvil forge case. i dont like the non detachable plug but theres winders on the back wich is a good thing. one thing i will say wich surprises me about this synth is there is very little noise from the output jacks on it. i am sure my battery will give out soon. looks easy enough to flip the panel and get inside tho. its cold but fat. some people say this sounds like a dx7 i dont know how it could it sounds like a poly61. spiky brittle and noisy. perfect.

also to Milton's comments on here: the envelopes on the Korg Poly-61 don't sound as quick as on the Jupiter 6....

to Milton: okay, that's a great track, but the 808 and the programming *make* the track. it's NOT the Poly-61. this korg synth sounds to me somewhat thicker in some respects than the JP6 but it's no where near as detailed and complex of an analog sound. man, i'm hearing this Poly-61 and the filters are nice and there's some low end, but something is missing - it's just too plain sounding to me. there's nothing going on in the upper mids.

my two cents... i do like the poly-61 but to compare it to a jupiter 6 is really silly, *unless* you are just upset because they are worth more money.
