You guys got me all sentimental about the old Poly61, I had one too, but it went on ebay when I got a Korg Ex8000 module, which is head and shoulders better than the POLY, but with that said the P61 was fun and easy to use, sounds were occaisionally brilliant, I miss mine a little, but it just took up valuable space though, need room for that new Waldorf Q rack anyway.... (I'm dreaming again...) more likely the new Virus rack is more in my range...
The rating is though, I'd say 4 marks, good but not great and certainly not too essential...

The Korg Poly 61 is not the uglies Synth on the planet.I bought mine for an Apple and an egg. The sound is fat ! Not as fat of other analog buddies,but it is OK.Compare the sound to the digital ones of that time. Programming is limited by the rough steps of the parameters,nevertheless the sounds are acceptable. As I have the non Midi Poly,I can not include it to my Setup for Midiguitar. The "UserInterface" is a little bit ancient and the buttons are already overtime. Seldom a manufacture produces superb quality like "Hiwatt" did for their amplifiers. HIWATT DR103 is in my eyes still the best Amp on earth.I wish this could be also said for the synths ! Conclusion:The Poly61 is not Mothers finest,but it is an intersting Analogsynth,not a must have, but a should not missed.

This was the first synth I ever owned, so I'll always have a bit of a soft spot for it. I learned the basics of synthesis IE envelope generation, etc, on this rig, and I've managed to come up with a few wild sounds over the years. I agree with the general atmosphere preented in the other review, that this is NOT th greatest synth ever made, but it IS a lot of fun. I've modified mine slightly for some easier use, added a program-up butto so i can just run up through th program sequence without having to punch in the number. I also added an output onto the clock signal in the arpeggiatior way back when I owned an MS-20, with a couple dividers for different speeds (1/2-speed drops), and I used that to trigger the MS-20. This wa great, because I could use the MS-2 to deliver a solid base line exactly in time with the arpeggiator on the Poly-61. Not quite MIDI, but certainly an interface!

I tend to agree with others that this synth is all about great sci-fi sounds, ambient, and deep bass patches. If these are sounds you're into, you can't get an analog for a better price. Of course, you get what you pay for. There are a handful of preset sounds that are cool and the rest are crap. Editing is clumsy and not very effective. Most of all, these things are very fragile; i.e. weak contacts, moody buttons, rinky-dink joystick. My joystick broke within a month and I've had to open it up twice to fix some contacts and glitches. But overall, it's a great accessory synth, especially for sampling and I use it LIVE all the time running through several pedals (run through Sovtek bigmuff and you have a space age electric guitar). This was one of the first synths I ever owned so I have a soft-spot in my heart for this clunky, underrated, limited, but fun toy. I am still searching for the elusive manual so please email me if you have any info.

I kinda like my Poly 61. It has very basic (limited) editing but the sound is still warm and analog. A lot like my Akai AX-80. The 61 isn't one of those "must have" synths. But if you have the money and space for one then go for it.
