I play in an '80s cover band (www.mrbelv.com) and this synth is able to produce lots of interesting sounds that came from this period (Gary Numan, Flock of Seagulls, Wall of Voodoo)... DON'T BRAK THE DAMN THING... Korg no longer supports it and parts are almost impossible to find. I know this from experience. My original Poly-61 was bought from some guy's ad in the paper. He had some outstanding programs on it - strings and fat synths - but the power supply blew and destroyed the controller chip and there went my sounds. (Always write down your parameters)... I found another one for $200 and snapped it up, but I'm having a hard time getting back to where I was. The arpeggiator works great for our Duran Duran covers (Hungry Like the Wolf and Rio).

Hmmn - I find this a very dissapointing synth - parameter resolution is rediculously low , DCO's sound weedy and the keyboard itself is terrible (springy and way too light)...It has a few reasonable basses , the odd good pad but overall its not up to much - Even the single OSC PolySix or a Juno is a much sweeter sounding synth. They do go for pretty low prices and at around the �150 mark are an ok buy - but dont expect too much.

Um, well this was my first synth so i am a bit biased but i really
love my old '61. The basic parameters are a bit limiting as are the
excrutiatingly annoying button controls, although
opening the lovely early 80's casing (which is thoughtfully on hinges)
and playing with the pots can generate some amazingly unpredictable
sounds. By altering each of the 6 voices you can get the arpeggiator
to do some interesting acid lines as well as hypnotic melodies.
Be warned though- mine tends to cut out and rarely has the same
sound twice!
As an atmospheric synth and as a (incredibly alien) sound generator
i'd recommend it wholeheartedly (especially at the usual prices),
but as any kind of instrument you'd do better to whistle.

Decent starter synth-one parameter at-a-time interface but straightforward enough. If you spend some time with it, it will do some cool basses, decent strings, and wierd sounds fit for a lo-bucks sci-fi show like Blake-7.
I even got some strange but cool percussion sounds out of it (even though it has no noise generator) , but I spent a LOT of time with it (It was the only machine I had at the time) You CAN get good sounds out of it, but it takes LOTS of time. If you spend more than $250.00 for one, don't admit it to anybody

A friend of mine had one of these for a while back when we were high school synth geeks. We had a lot of fun playing around with his Poly 61, just seeing what an analog synth could do. I have to admit that the P61 wasn't the sort of synth that a Keith Emerson fan could imitate his idol with; while analog, it sounded very thin and chintzy in my opinion, like a Vox Continental with a VCF, and it lacked essentials like separate envelope generators for VCF and VCA, portamento, and noise source. The range of values within each parameter was pretty slim too. But you could make a decent variety of very basic analog sounds, including some neato special effects using the LFO and VCF. I especially liked the arpeggiator, which could do some cool pseudo-sequencer things (think the very end of ELP's Brain Salad Surgery album...). I thought that it was an okay first foray into analog territory, and still is, if you don't mind the less than stectacular range of sounds. Three square waves.
